The biggest question mark and largest reservation I have is Garrett. Despite the loss of TO he still has the weapons to create a top offense in this league. But can he do it? Can he create a more consistent ground game to take the pressure of Romo? Can he utilize the weapons he has instead of focusing on chucking the ball 30 yards? If he can't make adjustments this year we're probably looking at 9-7 again and we need to clean (coaching) house.

2nd biggest is offensive line.
If they are as bad as last year, for whatever reason, than it doesn't matter what Garrett comes up with.

The crazy thing is that if the O-line can stay intact Garrett isn't such a problem because we will have the time needed for his plays to develop. Granted this big guys get winded and take plays off, that's when Romo gets wild. The other problem is that both Garrett and Romo lack the patience for a ground game, without which we will lay another egg in December. It's hard to say but I'm going to remain optimistic. If the offense struggles again this year more media types and fans will be calling for Garrett's head, he has flown under the radar to long on this...

I was flipping around the dial a couple of hours ago and unfortunately I caught 2 minutes of salisbury and scruggs on the fan. They were talking about how the cowboys are the 4th team in the division right now and not even in consideration for the playoffs!

Salisbury I think is intentionally trying to make everyone that listens to that show get all worked up and get a reaction. He basically is ripping romo everytime I listen and now today I heard him say we cant even play with the giants and that the Commanders leaped way ahead of us!

Now why anyone would listen to that garbage show I have no idea.

yeah, Gosslin and Cell phone Salsbury said they didnt think Cowboys had the talent to make the playoffs....Newy disagreed he thinks we are 2nd best in division....that Wash is still the same and Philly took steps back so far

We lost an average number of starters to injury last year, I believed that we ranked 17th in the NFL. We also were top five in terms of having the most starters start every game of the season. It's a reasonable proposition therefore to expect an average number of injuries to occur in subsequent seasons. Kind of a facts-based approach, you know.

I'm big on the common sense approach and your common sense should tell you that we shouldn't expect to lose Romo for three games and have him hobbled for the better part of the season, each year. Also, Felix Jones' speed and quickness adds a dimension to the team that will only be absent if he misses almost the whole season again.

Like I said... those two by themselves makes for an entirely different season. Yes we will have some injuries, but I doubt it will be Romo and Felix again.

Looking at season averages for injuries and not using your head is why I said you are FOS... and you are.

Doomsay;2696509 said:
As for individual players, who knows? Romo has shown no signs that he will change his risky pocket style despite all of our hopes that our OC morphs into rushing guru. As for Felix, he hurt himself twice ..without contact, so who knows about his future? We lost only one starting lineman on either side of the ball all season. Repeatable? Who knows, it's kind of pointless to speculate on individuals.

Romo wins games and him being healthy will make a huge difference.

So, Felix is now injury prone and we just don't know if he'll make it through a season or not? All that from a pulled hammy and a torn toe ligament?

TO was certainly an issue, but other than Tank mouthing off that final game (that he knew would be his last) I really haven't heard too much about the other two being disruptive. The question is, who will mend the rift between the pro and anti TO guys? It probably will work itself out, but I don't think that there will be instant chemistry if the record number of player media fingerpointings this offseason or general "out of locker room" talk is any evidence.

Tank rubbed some of the team the wrong way I think. No more egos is what they are asking for. And Pacman was a constant distraction.

I think the team will be glad to see all three going.

Doomsay;2696509 said:
TO didn't cause the defense to crumble or our ball carriers to fumble or our OC to not have a game plan. This soft coaching staff has been consistantly unprepared for big games and the team as a whole lacked effort. Getting rid of TO won't change all of that.

Like I said... you can't lay 44-3 on the coaching staff. If they couldn't prepare a team, Dallas would get blown out each week. The Philly game was a symptom of a much bigger problem in Dallas. Based on the way the front office has acted since then... it isn't hard to determine where they think the problems were at.

No, TO didn't make the defense miss tackles... but he was at the root of whatever made the team dissolve that day.

I missed the "I was wrong" statement. Jerry was forced into it, he shouldn't get credit for it. Jerry couldn't do the right thing by getting rid of his spineless yes man coach after a pathetic collapse and couldn't even stand to have a real football guy on staff (Reeves) to help him sort out the circus. I'm glad that TO is gone, but to strand us with $9 mm in cap money from a player that has has a long history of blowing up doesn't say much for Jerry's GMing abilities - especially since that new contract is less than a year old. Pathetic.

Nobody had to say, "I was wrong". It is implied by Jerry undoing his pet projects. As for the cap hit... I don't fault Jerry for trying with T.O. and the others... I do applaud him for cutting ties with them, regardless the cost.

I (and apparently Jerry) will take a 9 million dollar hit to watch to leaving Valley Ranch.

BTW, looking at your posting history... have you ever said anything good about the Cowboys? I mean besides the occasional "He is a better backup QB than we had last year"?

The team's performance on the field last season dramatically lowered my expectations going forward. I'm not sure there was (or are) ANY off-season moves that could change my perception of them. Until I see better performance on the field sustained over time, I'm doubtful we will see much improvement.

I hope I'm wrong, but as for expectations.....I don't have any good ones for now.

Barring a bunch of disasterous injuries, we will win 10-12 games and make noise in the playoffs. Bank it. I think this team is going to go into this coming season with a new attitude. The talent is there. We will run the ball more and have a more balanced offensive attack. Maybe it's just wishful thinking, but I don't think so. As someone else posted, the rookies from last year are going to be much better and more prepared for a long NFL season. Felix, Choice, Bennett, etc. will make our offense more reliable and more explosive at the same time. I think we'll be fine at DB. We need some more depth in the draft and/or free agency, but we have good corners. They're just young. Hopefully we'll avoid injuries to key positions, unlike last year.

The NFL has become nothing more than a quaterback driven 8-8 league. Teams go from penthouse to outhouse in a years time and vice versa. That being said I am happy with Romo, he aint perfect but he is top third in the league. As is he has penty of talent around him to put points on the board, though the left side of the line does scare me. To me it all comes down the defense, which by the way gave up three more points than the offense scored last year. The debacles of the last two games need to be put aside for this team to be very good. I am not sure Wade can make that happen. Nothing I have seen so far makes me think so.

I see, we have one of those really brave internet tough guys here, you are impressive with your insults from the basement. Your basic assertions that we will have no more injuries than average next year and not to certain players is as laughable as your belief that we would have won that game in Philly had it not been for TO. BTW, glossing over deep structural problems like the coaching staff doesn't make you a good fan.

If we made the play offs, I'd die of shock. I don't see any improvements on this team, mainly in the coaching staff and the offense. We still have the draft, but I don't see who could possibly help us with where we draft this year, so this will be a rough season unfortunately.

We're better at backup QB.

That's got to count for something (lol).

Nice.

Ware, James, and Ellerbe are gonna be a helluva LB trio. If Spencer actually does something, we'll have a disgusting LB group.

yep, or we could just find a better pass-rusher than Spencer, if we could somehow come up with Clint Sintim AND Ellerbe, that would be pretty, freakin' sweet

The guy we draft who'll beat out Brooking in training camp, thus relegating Brooking to Gatorade Assistant, where he is best suited to "play" at.

But what about you guys? Do you think the Cowboys taken a step back, or just moved on?

-Josh Ellis

No way do I feel the Cowboys have taken a step back. There's been a lot of addition by subtraction. Players that have created distractions (Pacman, TO, Tank) are gone. Players that fit the system and/or fill a short term need have been signed. Even though we don't have a 1st round pick, we have a lot of picks in total.

Olshansky was a fantastic, smart signing. Brooking should produce about the sme as Thomas did, or maybe more since he knows the Phillips 34 already. The offense will run more and make Witten and Williams the primary recieving threats. While Austin keeps defenses honest with a few deep ball plays. The defense now feels more comfortable with Jenkins and Scandrick and can potentially play more aggresively because so. So, yea, I see solid/smart moves by the Cowboys this offseason so far.

Look, this is a very talented but very undisciplined group of players who the Clown Wade Phillips has little control over.
With the still-divided team (T.O. loyalists vs. Witten-Romo loyalists) it will be a tough climb to even 9-7.
The eagles and giants will still provide stiff competition and the up and coming teams are ready to displace the Cowboys.

Again. Talented team, mellow coaching approach. It don't work. Even with the "improved Wade." If he didn't get it last year he won't this year.

I am feeling generous, so 9-7 with the playoffs iffy.
