I got to thinking about something after reading Nick Eatman's response to Tuesday's mailbag, on a question about which restricted free agents could be gone.

Nick mentioned he thought only two of the RFAs at defensive end would return, either Marcus Spears, Jason Hatcher or Stephen Bowen. I can't disagree with Nick's point, because I still find this year's free agency dealings to be a bit unpredictable given the uncapped season.

So if it works out like Nick and some others think it might, which two defensive ends would you prefer to keep of the three? The economics of it all could easily come into play, but performance is most important.

I'm thinking Spears, a starter since his rookie year, would be a given. But what about the other two guys? The Cowboys liked the work they did when sliding inside to rush the passer on third downs. Both players just completed their fourth season. Hatcher was a third-round pick out of Grambling, while Bowen was undrafted from Hofstra.

Coaches credited Bowen with 32 tackles last season, along with three sacks and 35 pressures, third-most on the team. He also deflected three passes and forced a fumble. Hatcher, who took a while to return to form after two off-season surgeries, had 29 tackles, one sack, 27 pressures, on pass deflection and a fumble recovered.

The Cowboys could easily bring them both back for training camp, and both could make the team. Eventually, though, the club might have to draw some distinction between the two in the form of a contract extension.

So who do you keep/pay? The Cowboys could be trying to decide that as we speak.

I thought Hatcher was going to be alot better than he has been... I kinda like Bowen a little bit better these days.. I realize that DE in our scheme isnt a glamour position but I would like someone to step up and take a hold of the position.

Give me Bowen.

Hatcher is still banking on that "potential" that Parcells labeled him with when we used a 3rd round pick on him in 06.

For some reason - I'll pick Bowen, too. I always imagine some sweep play or pitch play.. and Bowen out there disturbing the entire play, but not getting the tackle.

When I picture Hatcher.. I see a guy flexing after stuffing a run play 4 yards down field..

If we let one leave but have to draft his replacement, I'd vote for keeping both.

If we should end up with a boat load of draft picks like last year then draft one or two to compete and keep the highest potential guy.

I retrospect I would have like to see more of each play. But it seems Bowen makes more happen when he is in.

I actually think we should move Bowen to backup NT and keep both.

What's the logic in this? He's no where near the run stopper Siavii is at that position.

And for those who call these guys "decent" backups, I hate to say it, but you just don't know what you're see when you watch the games.

Our starting DEs are slightly, at best, better than our backups. And they're very good. Bowen and Hatcher are very good when they come in the game, yielding no drop off, and are potentials starters in this league without a doubt.

Same here.

Stephen Bowen is a player.

I'd look at possibly trying to trade Jason Hatcher if the coaches are sold on Marcus Dixon being ready for the 53.

Bowen is better at backside pursuit and slide which is a great advantage at NT. I like the way he can slide off the block and make a play.

Guess I'm one of the very few who still likes Hatcher a lot. He seems more built to be an everydown DE than Bowen, who looks to me more like a tall guy with long legs and a bulked-up upper body. Of course Bowen is a better nickel pass rusher, but I'm not sure Hatcher wouldn't be better as an everydown player.

And if you listened to Wade's PCs late in the year, he said Hatcher was really coming on, and that his offseason surgery (surgeries?) had held him back earlier in the year.

saves a roster spot as he can swing between DE and NT

that's one of the biggest reasons why he's stuck around with us

They tried Bowen at backup NT either this year or last in training camp and it was a dismal failure.

But we've been fine with taking 6 DL to games the last 3 to 4 years. What's the point in that. Siavii still averages about 13 to 17 potential run downs every game. You don't wanna put a guy who can't really play that position in there for that many plays.

Besides, didn't this experiment already fail with Parcells? Or was it when Wade first got here?

Bowen. Better fit. Losing Hatcher effects the Nicole some though.

Why can`t we just sign all 3 of them since they are RFAs. None are likely to be super expensive, they are all reasonably young and we don`t have much behind them on the roster to nonchalantly let one go.

I would rather do a sign and trade with one of them rather than just let them waltz their way onto another team with no compensation. So I`d tender with a second and see if they all get a bite.

If one of them gets a bite, I could let any of them walk. We could really use the pick on OL, S or even an everydown-ILB to groom behind Brooking and James.
