It’s always easy to second guess. But anytime you switch a player’s position and it doesn’t work out after two years, you wonder if he should’ve ever switched.
In the case with Isaiah Stanback, it’s not like playing quarterback was completely out of the question. Stanback once told me he figured about 10 NFL teams had him listed as a quarterback and he thought he would’ve been drafted around the sixth or seventh round. Instead, he was a fourth-rounder by the Cowboys as a wide receiver.
Again, hindsight is always 20/20 but you wonder how different things would’ve been if he stayed as a quarterback. He comes to a team, even the Cowboys, as a super-athletic quarterback, with a strong arm who needs some work.
He’s really no different than guys like D.J. Shockley, Seneca Wallace, Pat White or even Stephen McGee. None of those guys are really that ready to be NFL quarterbacks. They all have good arms but have some mobility that could land him on the field in a specialty role in the meantime.
Teams are drafting guys to run the Wildcat? It seems like Stanback would’ve been a perfect for that. If anything, Stanback would’ve come to the NFL with much more confidence. Would he have been a starting QB? No, but there’s about 35 in the league now that will never start either. That’s not the point.
To his credit, Stanback never publicly complained. He made every attempt to become a wide receiver, and for now, it just hasn’t worked out. That’s not to say another team won’t give him a chance and who knows, maybe the Cowboys will bring him back.
Because of the injuries at other positions and his lack of production and injury history, the Cowboys simply had to let Stanback go for the moment. Maybe he gets another shot with another team. And maybe, he gets to play his natural position.
