It’s always easy to second guess. But anytime you switch a player’s position and it doesn’t work out after two years, you wonder if he should’ve ever switched.

In the case with Isaiah Stanback, it’s not like playing quarterback was completely out of the question. Stanback once told me he figured about 10 NFL teams had him listed as a quarterback and he thought he would’ve been drafted around the sixth or seventh round. Instead, he was a fourth-rounder by the Cowboys as a wide receiver.

Again, hindsight is always 20/20 but you wonder how different things would’ve been if he stayed as a quarterback. He comes to a team, even the Cowboys, as a super-athletic quarterback, with a strong arm who needs some work.

He’s really no different than guys like D.J. Shockley, Seneca Wallace, Pat White or even Stephen McGee. None of those guys are really that ready to be NFL quarterbacks. They all have good arms but have some mobility that could land him on the field in a specialty role in the meantime.

Teams are drafting guys to run the Wildcat? It seems like Stanback would’ve been a perfect for that. If anything, Stanback would’ve come to the NFL with much more confidence. Would he have been a starting QB? No, but there’s about 35 in the league now that will never start either. That’s not the point.

To his credit, Stanback never publicly complained. He made every attempt to become a wide receiver, and for now, it just hasn’t worked out. That’s not to say another team won’t give him a chance and who knows, maybe the Cowboys will bring him back.

Because of the injuries at other positions and his lack of production and injury history, the Cowboys simply had to let Stanback go for the moment. Maybe he gets another shot with another team. And maybe, he gets to play his natural position.

Didn't a team already claim him with the idea of him being a QB? The Cheats, maybe?

Hey Nick, while you're putting together lists, put together one that includes all of the athletic, strong armed, college QBs that never even got drafted or that did, but were colossal busts.

We have a college QB on our team that could run the wildcat, one that can actually contribute as a WR as well, along with return punts.

I don't know that I ever voiced the opinion, but it's crossed my mind that he might have been a better QB in the NFL than he was a potential WR convert. That Hail Mary video of him putting the ball 70 yards down the field kind of sticks with you once you see it.

We have made a tragic mistake!

How was i so dumb to make up my own conclusions with the facts presented. Now that the patriots signed him, surely the sky is green. What have we done zoners! Start rueing.

We can change this!

Lets trade 2011's #1 pick for stanback the magnificent QB.

PANIC PANIC!!!!

Stanback: I'm a QB
September 7, 2009 10:41 AM

Posted by ESPN.com's Matt Mosley

Former Cowboys wide receiver Isaiah Stanback couldn't stay healthy in his two seasons and a training camp with the team. And there's also the part about him not being a very good wide receiver. The former University of Washington quarterback tried to make the transition, but he never looked comfortable running routes or catching the football, which can be useful tools to playing the position.

Fortunately for Stanback, Bill Belichick and the Patriots were there to catch him Sunday. Stanback will play quarterback on the Patriots' practice squad. Here's what he told ***BANNED-URL*** on Sunday:
"I tried very hard at receiver," Stanback said. "I busted my butt at receiver and did whatever was asked of me. I think I could do it, but I was never comfortable with it. Quarterback is what I've done my whole life. It's what I'm comfortable with."

Pretty stupid move on his part. He'll never be an NFL QB.

Yes, but he gave plenty of hints. His heart wasn’t into being the best WR he could be and maybe he played like crap because he wanted out of Dallas. Good for him, good luck and good riddance.

Agreed. I remember commenting on it in some thread with a video of an interview he did. It didn't seem like he was really buying into being a receiver.

i don't know. with the specialization occurring at the QB spot - i.e., wildcat formations - a team that is weak at QB might play him a bit.

As an every down guy. No way.

I don't know that he didn't have the talent to play QB coming into the league but being away from that position for 2+ years... it just kills development. Look at the hyper-talented Drew Henson... away from the QB role and could never get it going again.

Okay, let me rephrase that. Assuming no drastic, long-lasting, position-altering scheme advancements in the NFL, he's worthless as a QB.

Forgive me if I don't think that caveat happens.

Stanback is not a cowboy anymore so I'm not going to worry about it. Olgatree is the new boy on the block and i hope He does what Stanback couldnt.

isn't the real issue that he can't seem to stay healthy. Is that going to change as a quarterback? Wait til he gets crushed by a 300 lb linebacker going full steam. Its obvious that his heart was never in it for the wr transition. He'll be stocking groceries after this year.

QB or WR... Stanback was supposed to be this explosive athlete yada yada ... he's not. At all. Who cares what he does as long as he's not in a Cowboys uniform. Good luck to him, but it's whatever ya know?
