A familiar face showed up here at Valley Ranch on Tuesday at Cowboys practice as former head coach Jimmy Johnson told old stories and chatted it up with Jerry Jones and some former players and colleagues.
Johnson was in town to promote Crown Royal and it’s designated driver initiative for the holidays. But as a Fox studio analyst, he still knows the game very well and knows the NFC in particular.
When asked where the Cowboys rank in the NFC, Johnson said his former club isn’t too far behind the leaders of New Orleans and Minnesota.
“I think they’re right there on the verge,” Johnson said. “As a former coach, you can’t overlook Oakland here on Thursday, especially with the change at quarterback. I think if they can get by Oakland, which they should, the game up in New York will be the one who decides who is going to take control of the NFC East. I think (the winner) is going to be the favorite after that ballgame.
“As far as the Cowboys, they had a stinker up in Green Bay. They didn’t play well against Green Bay. The Washington game, I wasn’t displeased with what happened against them. People don’t realize unless you really know the Cowboys, Washington plays the Cowboys different than most teams. Just winning the game, that was an accomplishment.”
