* This is need-to-know information from Stephen Jones for those who think the Cowboys simply were flying by the seat of their pants when making the trade for Roy Williams at mid-season last year: The Cowboys got with their scouting department to project where wide receivers would go in this 2009 draft and then compared those guys and what they would be able to contribute immediately to the veteran wide receiver. And they realized, and likely figuring they would be drafting no higher than maybe 28 – and hoping deep down it was 32 – there was little chance they would be at the top to get a Tim Crabtree or Jeremy Maclin. “Even if they were there, Roy was a top 10 pick (seventh), and we haven’t lost sight of what we think he can be,” Jones said. “But he has five years of NFL experience, too. And if we were going to get up there to get one of those guys, we’d have to pay a lot and a ton of money, just as much to those guys as (Roy) who has the experience and drafted just as high.”

* Here is going to be the catch-phrase for the 2009 Dallas Cowboys: Competition. Quarterback Tony Romo repeatedly used the word last week when chatting with me out here at The Ranch and then VP Stephen Jones went on and on Thursday about competition, saying, “I think there is going to be a lot of competition at a lot of positions.” And then he said he feels this draft has a chance to push some players off the bottom 20 of this roster, pointing out how “Good, healthy competition makes you better as a whole.” Watch out for the word.

* When asked about negotiations on a extension for DeMarcus Ware, Stephen Jones said he wouldn’t “put a deadline on anything, but that’s it’s a priority.” They obviously have some various defensive contracts to work off now, with Pittsburgh’s James Harrison signing and also defensive tackle Albert Haynesworth. Stephen didn’t sound as if they were in a rush, but again that it’s something they just want to get done.

* Someone asked Stephen Jones, what with the new stadium opening on June 6 with the George Strait-Reba McEntire concert, if he knew what we’d be calling the $1.1 billion structure by then since for now New Cowboys Stadium and The Cowboys’ New Stadium have had to suffice. “We know it, but we’ll announce it at the right time,” he said. “It’s coming up.” That’s not to say, though, the announcement will be of a naming rights nature. “There will be a naming rights” at some point, Stephen said, “but not initially.”

LOL! Tim Crabtree. Geez Mick at least get his name right bro. :p

Everything else seems to be pretty standard answers to the same questions.

Maybe it's just me, but this speaks to the offensive line in my opinion.

I don't think there's a more contented bunch on the entire roster and I'd like to see a significant investment made in pushing the current starters and building for the future.

I hope the competition comments are about the O-Line as much as any position on the team. Those guys need something to kick them in their big rear ends and start playing far better than they have been, especially down the stretch.
