Newman Still Listed As Limited
Posted by mickshot at 9/10/2008 4:16 PM CDT on truebluefanclub.com

On the official Cowboys' injury report following Wednesday's practice, CB Terence Newman, WR Miles Austin and LB Anthony Spencer all are listed as having limited participation. But RB Marion Barber and WR Isaiah Stanback fully participated in the workout, according to the report the Cowboys must file with the NFL.

And once again working with the first-team offense in the injured absence of starting left guard Kyle Kosier is Cory Procter. Cowboys head coach Wade Phillips said after practice Procter once again will be his starter at left guard come Monday night.

Kosier and Sam Hurd were the only two not participating in practice.

Newman will hopefully play in our nickel packages on Mon.

Last year-after coming off that foot injury, he did so for a couple of games.

Last year when he had that foot injury-missed the first 2 games, played nickel in the next 2, then had a knee injury late in the season.

'04 had a nagging knee injury all year-the only reason why he played every game was b/c the rest of our secondary was decimated.

He also had injury problems in college.

I agree-phenomenal player, but made of glass.

Way overboard. Three games missed in five years in the NFL is "glass"?

And he didn't have any injury problems in college that I ever heard of.

Outside of the month of Nov, he wasn't himself at all. Throughout much of the season, he was playing off of receivers in zone.(which, of course, is not his mojo) Like I said-that foot/knee injury slowed him down.

He wasn't himself at all in '04-remember that year Darren Woodson went down, as well as Pete Hunter(our other starting CB). Otherwise, Newman might have missed a few games.

People made out of glass would have missed games in 2004. He missed zero games while playing hurt. He wasn't injured. He missed his first start last year and his first games (2 games). He came back and played great football and was rewarded, finally, with a Pro Bowl.

Newman should have been in the Pro Bowl in 2005 and 2006 for sure, and he has a strong case for 2003, his rookie year. DeAngelo Hall had no business being there. I think people see that now, but that doesn't get Newman's Pro Bowls back.

Anyone can get hurt playing the game. It happens to the best of them. Just ask the Chargers and Patriots. I'm just glad he is coming back, and Dallas doesn't have to rush him back to full time play right off the bat.

Yeah, if anyone is made of glass it's Tom Brady. He's always on the injury report and now is out for the year. ;)

What difference does it make as long as he's playing well?

That would be like calling Barber "glass" if he plays with hurt ribs this Monday. As long as he stays on the field and is effective, who cares if he's not "100%"? No NFL players are 100% after the first week anyway.

YPA isn't the only way to measure a CB, but it does give you some statistical evidence of a cornerback's play.

If you go back to 2004 and take the average YPA of cornerbacks in the NFL, Newman ranks 2nd. Shawn Springs is first.

Newman's YPA (2004-2007)

2004 5.8 YPA
2005 5.8 YPA
2006 7.1 YPA
2007 6.1 YPA

If you average his YPA for the four years you get 6.2 YPA.

Terence Newman has been very consistent in his play. He played dinged up in 2004 and still put up a 5.8 YPA. Perhaps, he should have been in the Pro Bowl that year, too.

Those YPA stats do tell you that Newman doesn't give up big plays. In fact, he has been one of the very best in the NFL at preventing receptions and big plays. The league average YPA is around 7.0 YPA. Newman's numbers shatter this bench mark.

Those numbers came from Joyner and the analysis came from Vela. I have to give them credit for their work.

Newman has earned the right on the field to have the confidence of the fans. He wants to play. It is the team that is wisely holding him back, because there are bigger fish to fry than the Cleveland Browns.

When you only watch the Cowboys when they're really good--and barely then, last year *is* always for Newman.

Barbs will be in there most of the game .You watch.Like I said Newman is great but a tad injury prone. If he isnt out he is limited.Stanback is injury prone too.But I give him props for playing with his arm barely in his body.He is playing cause he knows he cant sit out he may not make the team again.Newman got paid and knew his job is set in stone and has known this for years.Either way I still think he is a great player when on the field and a huge part of this team.It may be time to rub some dirt on it though.

It would be great to have Terence Newman back in the lineup, but I hope the Cowboys don't rush him back in the lineup.

With or without Terence Newman, the Dallas Cowboys overall are still more talented than the Eagles.

I have seen you post more than once that newman was soft and made of glass, that isn't a "tad" injury prone. He has played hurt a ton, you just don't rememeber that, fixate on the few games he has missed and pretend to have a valid point.

I am not flaming you, I don't think you are a troll, and I kinda like you, but dude you haven't been at all rational about T.New.

#1 - he's not a Great player - very good - yes : Great? NO. He does not change games - he doesn't pick enough balls off. Deion was great, Lester Hayes, Mel Renfro, Darell Green etc

#2 - no matter how much you like him, he's undeniable soft.
