#1 - he's not a Great player - very good - yes : Great? NO. He does not change games - he doesn't pick enough balls off. Deion was great, Lester Hayes, Mel Renfro, Darell Green etc
#2 - no matter how much you like him, he's undeniable soft.
Did he change the game when he picked off Jason Campbell last year?
Did he change the game when he picked off Edwards last year?
Did he ice the game on Thanksgiving last year?
Terence Newman is the best slot defender in the NFL, and I dare you to name one who is better. Newman gave up two TDs in two years (2005-2006), and he didn't give up one last year. So, that is two TDs in three years. In 2005 and 2007, he diidn't give up one TD. In 2006, he gave up 2. He helps win games by
preventing throws and big plays, and in Phillips' defense last year, the big play opportunites started to come a little more for him. It isn't like he doesn't get some interceptions. Plus, Newman isn't targeted very often. He doesn't get the opportunites that some other players get.
Who has checked Steve Smith all over the field and shut him down, not once, but twice during this decade. It isn't all about interceptions. Anthony Henry was thrown at over 100 times in 2006. That led the NFL. Why do they target him so much? Henry is a good player.
Who has done it?
Newman can beat you and excells in zone, man, press man, off man... It doesn't matter.
Ask
Plaxico Burress about his
1 catch for 5 yards in the second Giants game last year and compare that game with his first game against Dallas.
Albert Breer wrote about Newman's stellar play against Burress that day (Plus, I saw it with my own eyes.) and about him playing a key role in shutting him down. Ask Dallas Clark about his 1 for 5 yards when the Colts played in Dallas. Clark lived in the slot. I saw him torch Champ Bailey last year out of the slot when Denver tried to match Bailey up with him.
When you play a lot of man coverage, like Newman did under Parcells, your back is to the quarterback. Playing with your back to the QB, can limit pick opportunities. Wade Phillips has talked about this fact.
The numbers and his play on the field say you are wrong.
