The Cowboys weren't surprised by Kansas City throwing to linebacker Mike Vrabel down on the goal line. Nobody was.
Vrabel came into the game with 10 career catches, all for touchdowns. Knowing this, the Cowboys still managed to let Vrabel go unchecked on a playaction pass in the second quarter, giving the Chiefs a 10-0 lead.
Kansas City was pretty sneaky with the way they did it actually, putting Vrabel in and having him report eligible before a second down running play, then throwing it to him the next when the defense might have forgotten about him.
"We knew it was a pass," Wade Phillips said. "We felt like we had the right call for what it was, but we didn't execute it. And when it comes down to it we either didn't work on it enough or - you know, it's my responsibility.
"We worked on the exact play, but we should've worked on it more, obviously."
Phillips said the Cowboys were supposed to have man-to-man coverage on the red zone specialist. And sure Vrabel went free, but at least one Cowboy got a hand it Matt Cassel's face on the throw.
