Not long after the Cowboys clinched the NFC East title with a convincing win over the Eagles last Sunday, backup quarterback Jon Kitna was raving over the play of Tony Romo.
Not only was he proud of Romo for taking every snap from center this season, an accomplishment Kitna said he’s done twice in his career, but he wondered out loud just why Romo isn’t getting more mentioning in the NFL MVP discussions.
“The one thing that’s kind of a disservice to him is that . . . I don’t understand how his name isn’t mentioned as an MVP in this league,” Kitna said. “Just look at how well he’s played all year. He’s played at the highest level all season long. Even the two games we lost in December, he’s had a passer rating of over 100. It’s amazing that nobody is talking about it. I guess that’s the double standard of being a Cowboys quarterback with the expectations. He would never say it, but I think his name needs to be in there.”
Romo broke his own single-season passing record he set in 2007 (4,211 yards) with 4,483 passing yards, which led the NFC this year and ranked third in the NFL behind only Matt Schaub (4,770) and Peyton Manning (4,500).
Romo also finished the season with a career-best 97.6 quarterback rating, and his touchdown-to-interception ratio of 26/9 is the second best in Cowboys history, only behind Roger Staubach’s season in 1971, when he tossed 15 touchdowns and just four interceptions. However, one thing to point out: Staubach threw just 211 passes while Romo set the club record this year with 550 attempts.
