Not long after the Cowboys clinched the NFC East title with a convincing win over the Eagles last Sunday, backup quarterback Jon Kitna was raving over the play of Tony Romo.

Not only was he proud of Romo for taking every snap from center this season, an accomplishment Kitna said he’s done twice in his career, but he wondered out loud just why Romo isn’t getting more mentioning in the NFL MVP discussions.

“The one thing that’s kind of a disservice to him is that . . . I don’t understand how his name isn’t mentioned as an MVP in this league,” Kitna said. “Just look at how well he’s played all year. He’s played at the highest level all season long. Even the two games we lost in December, he’s had a passer rating of over 100. It’s amazing that nobody is talking about it. I guess that’s the double standard of being a Cowboys quarterback with the expectations. He would never say it, but I think his name needs to be in there.”

Romo broke his own single-season passing record he set in 2007 (4,211 yards) with 4,483 passing yards, which led the NFC this year and ranked third in the NFL behind only Matt Schaub (4,770) and Peyton Manning (4,500).

Romo also finished the season with a career-best 97.6 quarterback rating, and his touchdown-to-interception ratio of 26/9 is the second best in Cowboys history, only behind Roger Staubach’s season in 1971, when he tossed 15 touchdowns and just four interceptions. However, one thing to point out: Staubach threw just 211 passes while Romo set the club record this year with 550 attempts.

Romo's been terrific, but there's too much competition to give him serious consideration for MVP this year.

His 97.6 passer rating, amazingly, was only 8th best in the NFL this year.

A 97.6 rating in 2008 would've been 2nd best in the NFL. Go figure.

There was just 1 QB with a 100+ rating last year (Rivers). This year, there were 5 (Brees, Favre, Rivers, Rodgers, Roethlisberger). Peyton barely missed the cut... he finished with a 99.9 rating.

Then when you consider the year Chris Johnson had, it's pretty tough to justify Romo's name being near the top of a list of MVP hopefuls.

Romo is never going to be in a league MVP discussion unless he throws 35+ TDs again. The last time he did that Brady was having his 50+ TD season, so Romo wasn't in the mix due to that, but you're not going to win a league MVP with 26/9 TD ratio, because while it is what the Cowboys needed to win, it's not flashy.

Rivers, Brees, Rodgers, Manning, Favre, all these guys have similar or better numbers, which is why Tony is not going to win an MVP. If Kitna is just saying Tony's name should be in the mix, that's probably true, but who cares. The media is dumb.

Kudos to Kitna for stepping up as a teammate and putting his boy's name out there, though. We can keep him around as a backup as long as he's physically capable and wants to be here, IMO.

That's what 5 mill a year gets you from a backup QB.

Kitna is the perfect backup.

Its easy to say that when he has not played a down.

:laugh2:

Very accurate and valid points, Nav. However, consider the meaning of MVP...Most Valuable Player. Where would the Cowboys be without Tony's services this year? I know he won't get consideration for MVP, for the very reasons you listed. But if we're really talking about a player's value to his team's success, then Tony should be in the conversation.

That's true, but those other teams need their QBs just as much as we do. Tony's stats just aren't worthy of MVP consideration, but I like Kitna for saying so. While Tony's stats aren't impressive, this has been his best season by far, and if he wins a SB, he's on a his way to the Hall, MVPs or not.

Surprised there is no farve MV talk considering how old he is and the record the Vikings have,

besides seems odd the MVP cannot even make the probowl.

It will all be a moot point when he walks off with the field saying "I'm going to Disneyland!"

Regular season MVP? Nice little award.

Super Bowl MVP? Cream of the crop, my friends.

Well, I do think you could say that about any number of teams. The Packers without Rodgers would be nothing, the Colts without Manning would be doomed, etc.

If I had to cast a vote, I'd give it to Manning ever so slightly over Brees, largely because we punked that arse a couple of weeks ago. LOL.

I totally agree. I'm surprised he held up the entire season considering that he's been hit constantly this year. I mean, who heard of Sidney Rice and Shiancoe before this season?

I'd rather Romo becomes the MVP of the SB.:D
He will be MVP of the Superbowl, if we get there of course. ;)

One thing that's great about Kitna is he's not afraid to run off at the mouth :)
