The consensus opinion regarding the right cornerback position is that Orlando Scandrick has outplayed Mike Jenkins since the two were drafted – albeit four rounds apart – last season.
But unless the Cowboys are going to make it a fair competition, then arguing over who has played better is pointless. So far, when Jenkins has been healthy, he's gotten nearly all of the first-team reps in practices and the games.
But from the sounds of things coming out of Monday’s open locker room at Valley Ranch, the Cowboys are planning on running Scandrick with the first-team defense this week.
It’s not a demotion for Jenkins, but simply a rotation. The first preseason game is thrown out, considering both Terence Newman and Jenkins were injured and didn’t travel to Oakland. Scandrick started, opposite Alan Ball, and played well.
Last week, both starting cornerbacks returned and Jenkins was involved in a couple of plays, including the Titans’ only touchdown of the game. Playing in a Cover 2 defense, Jenkins let Tennessee receiver Kenny Britt go, looking for safety help. But Ken Hamlin didn’t get there before Britt had already caught a touchdown pass.
After the game, Wade Phillips didn’t blame either player, only himself for calling that particular defense so close to the end zone.
Jenkins also had a couple of receivers get by him for deep passes but didn’t allow a catch on either play.
But with this being the third preseason game, it’s a chance the Cowboys will run the starters out for another half. If Scandrick indeed plays with the first unit, let’s see how long the Cowboys leave him in there.
Again, let’s not forget that both of these guys will be used in the dime package, which the Cowboys run anywhere from 40-50 percent a game. The Cowboys need them both and will play them both. But apparently, which one runs out of the tunnel for pre-game introductions is turning into a big deal.
