Ware Already Has 'C' Stitched On His Jersey
Posted by jellis at 6/17/2009 5:31 PM CDT on truebluefanclub.com

A lot has been made about DeMarcus Ware taking on a more vocal leadership role in the locker room. Today he turned up at practice wearing a captain's patch.

There letter 'C' was stitched on his right breast, though Ware said it didn't stand for captain. Actually it was Leonard Davis having a little fun with the outside linebacker.

"Leonard put this on (my jersey) at lunch time, it's for 'company guy,'" Ware said, grinning. "Last week, we usually run a 200 after every practice, and I said 'Let's run a 300,' and the other guys got upset saying 'Oh you're a company guy.'"

Davis grabbed Ware's practice jersey at lunch Wednesday and had the C stitched on. Of course, Ware lived up to the "company guy" label after the final practice of mini-camp. Asked how Igor Olshansky compares to the departed Chris Canty, Ware said the Cowboys wouldn't miss their old teammate up front.

"No," Ware said. "They always make the right decisions around here."

As much as that sounds like a canned answer, Ware did elaborate a little more. Olshansky has missed a good deal of the OTAs and this week's mini-camp because of a back injury, but said he can already tell the new defensive end won't be a liability at all.

"When he was in there I think he was the same as Chris, to tell you the truth" Ware said. "He's a guy that can stop the run but also push the pocket just like Chris used to do, and I think he's going to be a great asset to us."

All jokes aside, Ware was asked whether he would like to sport a real captain's patch when the Cowboys vote for their teammates just before the season starts.

"I hope so," he said. "I feel that way."

Canty wasn't that great. He would make a play here and there. He never lived up to the hype. I'm glad we have Olshansky instead. He seems like a high character, high motor guy and he also comes in with better stats.

Very cool, both on Ware stepping up and on Igor.

I hope the guys calling him a company guy were kidding and they ran that 300, though. This sounds like loser schoolkids trying to bring down the ones who study more than they do.

But we've needed this for a long time. I always thought that one reason we didn't have leaders is that these days players ask, "Who are you to tell me what to do?" Ware actually is now a good enough player that he can command respect and have these guys follow him.

Parcells definitely picked the right player. He has the potential to be a HOFer. Not Merriman. His body is falling apart.

Parcells was high on him and he picked almost every player while he was here to the best of my knowledge.

To the best of my knowledge Tuna wanted Spears with the 11th pick but was voted down.

Yep, and we wouldn't have ended up with Ware or Merriman in that scenario.

Exactly... Thank God they disagreed!

Everyone calls Parcells a genius but the scouting department along with other high ups in the organization should get the credit.

Hey you don't have to mock anyone.

Good thing he was voted down. Spears has been a BUST and we would have lost out big time. Almost as bad as Greg Ellis/Randy Moss.

"Last week, we usually run a 200 after every practice, and I said 'Let's run a 300,' and the other guys got upset saying 'Oh you're a company guy.'"

Hence what i said ealier about these players being lazy and having too much energy after practice doing stupid dances and practical jokes. Wade is a softy and why the mentality wont change.

Once again the record must be set straight.

BEFORE THE COMBINE: BP wanted to take SPears early as the only true 3-4 DE that was projected in the first rd. AT THAT time Merriman was moving up the charts but Ware was still a late first rd pick. Since we had #20 it was felt that we could get both of them - Spears then Ware.

AFTER the COMBINE: After ware had torn it up totally there it was now him and Merriman as the two top pass rushers in the draft. It was very clear that both would be gone before #20 so it was agreed that either Merriman or Ware with #11 and Spears at #20.
Then came the debate about who to pick- BP got to thinking that Ware would make the better all around LB, while it was possible that Merriman would be the better pass rusher.
And in the end we got Ware and Spears and everyone was happy.
