Once again the record must be set straight.

BEFORE THE COMBINE: BP wanted to take SPears early as the only true 3-4 DE that was projected in the first rd. AT THAT time Merriman was moving up the charts but Ware was still a late first rd pick. Since we had #20 it was felt that we could get both of them - Spears then Ware.

AFTER the COMBINE: After ware had torn it up totally there it was now him and Merriman as the two top pass rushers in the draft. It was very clear that both would be gone before #20 so it was agreed that either Merriman or Ware with #11 and Spears at #20.
Then came the debate about who to pick- BP got to thinking that Ware would make the better all around LB, while it was possible that Merriman would be the better pass rusher.
And in the end we got Ware and Spears and everyone was happy.

That's what happened. And like I said before, BP chose the right guy.

Eh, no, I think they figured out right before the draft that they should take the LB because the way things were shaping up, the LBs wouldn't last to 20 while the DE might.

But Parcells wanted Merriman. Stephen and Jerry had to tell BP the night before that they were taking Ware, and he wasn't all that happy about it.

That's straight from Broaddus who was with the team then. He went over this a couple months ago when he was on 103.3 almost every day and told a bunch of these old stories.

It takes more than a "C" on your chest to be a leader. Ware is a great player but I do not see him being a leader on the field. He seems to have no fire in him to get in a teamates face and hold players accountable for their play.

I see no one on the team like that. Coaches or players. Until that changes we will not win.

You fight the way you train. So far it's to much *******ery and "boo boo's" and that my friends will carry over to game day.

Link? Your story sounds nice, but multiple sources have stated that Parcells wanted to draft Spears w/the first of the 2 first rounders, but was "talked out of it".

In 2003 with the Cowboys, he lobbied for Dewayne Robertson or Kevin Williams, top-rated defensive tackles, with the fifth pick. The scouting department talked Jones into taking cornerback Terence Newman.

In 2005, Parcells wanted defensive end Marcus Spears with the 11th pick. He was overruled, and the Cowboys took linebacker DeMarcus Ware instead. Spears still was on the board when the Cowboys picked again at No. 20.

Exactly... Thank God they disagreed!

Everyone calls Parcells a genius but the scouting department along with other high ups in the organization should get the credit.

Parcells does good things when the team is on the field, usually. Or atleast in the 80s/90s NFL with triple tight end sets and power I formations :lmao:

in all seriousness, his scouting/selections have never been any good. Bobby Carpenter, anyone?

Its easier to think Parcells is the genius and Jerry is a idiot...

All the good draft picks were Parcells....all the bad ones were Jerry's

Very cool, both on Ware stepping up and on Igor.

I hope the guys calling him a company guy were kidding and they ran that 300, though. This sounds like loser schoolkids trying to bring down the ones who study more than they do.

But we've needed this for a long time. I always thought that one reason we didn't have leaders is that these days players ask, "Who are you to tell me what to do?" Ware actually is now a good enough player that he can command respect and have these guys follow him.

facepalm x oh I dunno, 10?

All this came out right after the draft= but the part about Ware rocketing up the charts was there for everyone to see. BEFORE the combine Spears was the logical choice at #11. And BP was always conflicted about Merriman and Ware due to the usual tradeoff you have about a pass rusher vs a complete LB who is not as good a pass rusher. Of course now we can see that Ware is every bit as good a Pass rusher and a better overall LB to boot.
ANd Broadus was not there for the many meeting Jerruh and BP had trying to make up their mind about which one to take. I think towards the day of the draft some doubts about Merriman (not just the roid possibility) reached the point where I think both of them had no problem taking Ware at #11.

This is basically my understanding of how it happened. We were down to Merriman and Ware and even Coach Parcells said there were some things they heard late about Merriman that they didn't like and it was Ware from then on.

Parcells liked Spears a lot at the Senior Bowl, no question about it, but I don't buy for a second that he was a serious consideration at 11. I think we worried about him making it to us and we were already making plans around Erasmus James, but it worked out in the end.

Spears in that draft was very much like what happened with Tyson Jackson in this draft, but in reverse. Jackson built more momentum late and went high. Spears was the opposite.

Spears looked to be the prototype of the 3-4 DE. Unfortunately he is a JAG.
