One of the things the Broncos are doing with Kyle Orton this season is giving him quick, easy throws, such as the little smoke screens out to a wide receiver when a cornerback is giving him lots of rooms.

Defending those has been a bit of a problem for the Cowboys this season, as the cornerbacks have missed some tackles.

Wade Phillips admits he is emphasizing the need to defend those quick passes well this week.

"We can see it, we missed some early in the game last week," Phillips said. "That's a concern, so we work extra on those kinds of things, and it's something we work on all the time. Especially the quick passes to the wide receivers, that's a drill that we work almost every day, coming up and tackling and also where to funnel the guy.

"You want to funnel him inside where those big linebackers can come and knock the hell out of him. That discourages them from doing that, making a short gain and really getting hit hard."

Yeah, secondary (tackling) was atrocious last week. It's got to get better. We need to start playing up more & bumping those guys. It gives the line a chance to get upfield & it takes those quick dump offs out of the equation. Of course, it would help to get better safety support when they do play tight.

And the week before too. Scandrick was absolutely HORRIBLE in the exact situation the article talked about. He missed at least 4 times. We've got to do a much better job.

Agreed. That's what I like to hear.

Last week, the week before and week one secondary tackling has been garbage so far the entire season

It actually seems like our guys when they ARE in position to make a play are trying to go for a highlight clip power hit instead of wrapping up and just making the damn tackle

I completely agree with playing tighter on the wrs. You bumpthem and get them off the routes which give your rushers extra time to get to the qb. If anything campo needs to teach the DBs how to WRAP UP. However, wuh the way our d has been playing in the redzkne a bend don't break kinda def may work out.

The secondary tackling has been a problem all three games... They need to just wrap up and worry about the big hits later!

I agree. I'll take fundamental tackling over trying to make the highlight reels any day of the week.

Last week? Try the entire season thus far! :laugh2:

I think the tackling is much more exacerbated when the corners line up so far off the LOS. All THREE of the starting corners don't seem to tackle all that well in space these past 3 weeks.

Keeping the corners tight on the WRs should eliminate 95% of the smoke passes and WR screens. Not only does it minimize a weakness for the Cowboys but it also takes away from a Bronco strength, the short quick pass.

Steve Smith and big Muhamed are very hard to tackle. Muhamed is huge.

I'm not worried.

Probably an article we should have seen a couple of months ago.

Maybe it will turn in to an article that we read in January?

;)

Against the Giants, the WR wouldn't even move when Scandrick would come up to hit him. Manningham (who weighs as much as a slightly damp mongoose) simply shrugged Orlando off and continued to run with the ball.

I hope the defense has that fixed by now.

I bet they do...or will still be a work in progress.

;)

Play smart not hard. Save the good stuff for last.

I hope the team and coaches are watching how JETS played NE. Try to simulate that type of D. If Brady can't do it, Orten will not be able to either.

now they're emphasizing tackling from the corners

1st it was emphasizing special teams play

seriously, it's been ridiculous

Another problem is they don't make the high light reel either. Wouldn't it be great to have a db (cb or s) that could cover and make the high light reel both?
