The question was posed to Jerry Jones as follows: Do you see Roy Williams not being a starter next year?

"No. No. I do not," the owner said. "No. A big no."

The double negative makes it convoluted in print, but Jones was affirming that Williams will continue to be among the Cowboys’ top two receivers when the 2010 season begins.

Head coach Wade Phillips said Saturday night that one news source had wrongly interpreted his Friday comments about getting more from Williams. Phillips was saying Williams and the team can do things differently to try to increase his impact, not that his starting job is up for grabs.

Phillips has stressed that the best players will play. The Cowboys see Williams as one of their two best receivers.

"He’s certainly got room for improvement, we all know that," Jones said. "He’s got technical things he can work on and improve."

Roy Williams not part of the change Jerry Jones talks about

Jerry Jones expects to see 10 or 11 new faces in a contributing role in 2010.

When asked if the changes he mentioned could impact Roy Williams' role as a starting wide receiver, the Cowboys owner answered with, "a big no.

"I'm optimistic about Roy Williams,'' Jones continued. "We've got to do some things to help Roy, to help his game. We've got to do some things with the way we get him the ball to enhance his game.

"We're going to do that.''

Jerry will hang on to his mistakes and defend them until his son convinces otherwise.

Roy Williams will be a starter in 2010

By Calvin Watkins

Jerry Jones spoke to a handful of reporters on Sunday at the NFL Scouting Combine in Indianapolis and covered a variety of subjects that we'll talk about in the next 24 hours.

One topic of interest was wide receiver Roy E. Williams.

Jones said Williams will remain a starter in 2010 despite coming off a disapointing 38-catch 596-yard season.

"I’m optimistic about Roy Williams," Jones said. "We’ve got to do some things to help Roy, to help his game. We’ve got to do some things with the way we get him the ball to enhance his game. We’re going to do that."

When asked if he could see Williams not being a starter, Jones said, "No. No. A big no."

On Friday, coach Wade Phillips was asked if Williams could he lose his status as a starter, and he said yes. But that could be the situation for any of the Cowboys' players.

However, Williams has been criticized for his poor play after the Cowboys gave up three draft picks, including a first rounder, to the Detroit Lions at the trade deadline last year.

"Knowing Roy, I think it’s healthy. I think it’s healthy," Jones said. "One of the things that he’s really shown me is that he can handle that kind of situation. You can say criticism, but just how he can handle it. I’m sure he’s disappointed on a personal basis with last year. He shouldn’t be disappointed in his effort. I’m not, and we’re not. But the way he’s handled that and the way he’s kept working, that’s going to pay off for us."

Here is the entire off season in movie script plot synopsis form.

Reporters A, B, C, D, E, F, & G all feel a need to write weekly Roy Williams scenarios.

Fans read Reporters A, B, C, D, E, F, & G's material and lose their minds.

Week after week after week after week of this same tired cycle.

NFL Draft.

We are back on the cycle. Week after week...

For a second there, there was a glimmer of hope and sanity. Then Jerry had to puff out his chest and be Jerry, castrating his coach along the way. Advantage: Bach.

Just CHILL: Despite internet frenzy, Roy Williams' job as a starter is not in jeapordy, never was according to Phillips and Jones

Clarence Hill

Ran into Wade Phillips Saturday night and he was not pleased with reports saying receiver Roy Williams' job was on the line based on an interview he had with reporters on Friday.

Phillips said his answer to a hypothetical question was taken out of context by an internet blogger, creating headlines on espn.com and profootballtalk.com.

When asked if Patrick Crayton or Kevin Ogletree could replace Williams in the starting lineup if they outperformed him, Phillips said "We are going to play the best player."

Phillips said he plays the best players at every position and was not singling out Williams. He says he considers Williams of his two best receivers along with breakout star Miles Austin.

The question was based on the general opinon that Crayton and Ogletree out performed Williams last season but were kept out of the lineup. Phillips even said at that time that that characterization was false.

That part was left out of the initial report.

On Sunday, Phillips' opinion was backed up owner Jerry Jones who all but guaranteed a starting job for Williams next season.

When asked if envisioned Williams not being a starter, Jones said emphatically: "No, No. A big No."

Jones understands that fans and some media have negative opinion of Williams because of his disappointing play since coming over from Detroit in a trade in 2008. He says the Cowboys and Williams share the blame for his poor production. But he doesn't see the criticism creating a negative environment that will prohibit Williams from succeeding here.

In fact he says its the opposite.

Last year it was romo, and how he sucked. now its williams.

I really honestly dont think williams is going to put us over the top or sink our battleship, so to me spending all this time on him is pointless.

If he plays like last year while he may not single handedly sink the ship he does put a hell of a hole in hull

The way he played we were basically a man down for most of the games. Which is sad personally I think he could be good I just don't think it's going to be in Dallas that it's going to happen.

That makes one of us. How is Jerry gonna enhance RW game? Catch the ball for him?

Sure they did. This is Jerry at his worst, neutering his head coach a day later. Even Wade knows the guy is a stiff.

WOW. Wade wants to run a football team and Jerry castrates that notion. Jerry needs to get off his high horse if he ever wants to win another Super Bowl.

Are you suggesting he wasn't on a high horse when he won all those SBs in the 90s.

No. But we don't have Herschel Walker or the best offensive line in the history of the NFL either. You have to play your best players now with the way the league is set up, if he wants to stay on his high horse by not benching Roy then he will not win in this league. A below average #2 WR in a pass happy league and you don't get far, plain and simple.

Jerry's ego is growing out of proportion, he's starting to lose touch with reality. No, No means YES????

And, in a related story, it was revealed that the owner's name is now

Jerry "Al Davis" Jones

I love how the mouthbreathers ignore this. Wade said that the RW quotes from before left out the context of what was said before.

And tyke, you are probably the biggest media shill I have ever seen.
