Jones May Have More Words For Bennett
Posted by jellis at 3/1/2010 5:33 PM CST on truebluefanclub.com
It wasn't that long ago, in last summer's OTA practices and training camp, that Martellus Bennett looked like the Cowboys' secret weapon.
Obviously those expectations have been scaled back. Still, the Cowboys hope Bennett, who will turn 23 on March 10, can mature as a player. It's not so much his extracurricular activities which trouble Jerry Jones as much as his relaxed attitude when there are football matters at hand.
Midway through the season, Jones said he told Bennett what his father had told him years before, that if he would quit trying to be so funny, he might get something done. Word is Jones later felt the need to give Bennett a tongue-lashing in front of his teammates.
The owner said Sunday he thought Bennett started to get it right at the end of the season. The second-year tight end tied his season high with three catches in the Divisional round loss to the Vikings.
Jones wouldn't share any more of his personal talks with Bennett, but expected there would be more in the future. If he didn't believe in the kid, he probably wouldn't take the time.
"He is smart guy," Jones said. "He is ambitious. I think we will get some benefit from that. But before its over with we will probably have some conversations."
