Pat Watkins Is Ready To Fight For His Job
Posted by jellis at 6/18/2009 12:36 PM CDT
Fourth-year safety Pat Watkins knows what he's facing when training camp starts in late July. There will be stiff competition in the secondary.

The Cowboys drafted DeAngelo Smith and Mike Hamlin to play safety, while third-year players Alan Ball and Courtney Brown are being trained at safety and corner. Gerald Sensabaugh was signed as well. With that kind of depth built up, and the likelihood of only four or five safeties making the team, Watkins is going to have to really show up. Generally a tie in training camp goes to the younger guy.

“I try not to go in worried about it," Watkins said Wedneasday. "I’ve got to do what I do because they’re going to make the decision anyway. I can’t make that decision in the end, but what I can do is just practice and play the best I can.”

Watkins is a special teams ace, so he has an advantage there. During the summer OTAs and mini-camp, he's stood out on defense at times as well, including a leaping interception of Tony Romo on Wednesday morning. Watkins credited the jump with all the lower body work he got while resting the neck injury that caused him to be in-and-out last season. After shoulder surgery Watkins had three months to rest his neck.

It took a little while to get used to being back on the field, but Watkins says he'll be ready to go when camp starts and the competition for jobs begins in earnest.

“I started off rusty (in OTAs)," he said. "But as you run around you start getting your timing back, your footwork, so for the first couple days I was falling all over the place, but I’m in a groove now.”

Its put up or shut up time for this kid. I have had such hopes for him over the past few years. I think he will end up making the team because of special teams.

Hard to believe this is year 4 for Pat. Man, 06 is turing out to be a bad draft:mad:

Without question the poster child for our undisciplined and dumb play. Blatantly grabbing the face mask and blocking in the back on special teams and bad ball recognition on defense.

Either he doesn't care, can't do it, or nobody is coaching him up.

I just don't think he has it.

Kind of sad about him.

I think many of us were stoked when we picked him in the draft and thought we got a steal.

Sarcasm? :lmao2:

Carpenter (1st round) - A career backup to this point.

Fasano (2nd round) - Didn't show much while he was here, was traded and seems to be turning the corner. He may be the best pick of this class when it's all said and done, which isn't saying that much, but he's not in Dallas anymore.

Hatcher (3rd round) - Career backup to this point.

Skyler Green (4th round) - Had a cup of coffee here and has been a journeyman since.

Pat Watkins (5th round) - Started here and there, but is basically a backup and isn't good at all.

Montavious Stanley (6th round) - Didn't make it to a game in Dallas and has been a journeyman since.

Pat McQuistan (7th round) - Career backup, but to be fair this is at the point at the draft where you're lucky to get someone who can contribute.

EJ Whitley (7th round) - suffered career ending injury before he ever made it to a game.

As bad as a 1995-2001 Jerruh draft.

I did too...

He has the size...but, maybe he's just not a "football" player? A good athlete, but not a player.

 He better get it figured out or "see ya.."

All of this on Parcells/Irelands watch.

I was the biggest Watkins supporter when we drafted him. I thought he was going to be the next big thing for us. His size and attributes were interesting. Too bad he could never tackle or cover. Doubt he makes the roster with Hamlin and Deangelo being drafted.

Hopefully he's finally learning how to tackle properly.

Somewhere Jason Campbell is laughing. Man that was embarrassing. I was watching it with my buddies who hate the Cowboys :

"Bad" is relative.

There's no argument which can be made for Green and Stanley. They haven't contributed much both here or elsewhere.

Hatcher, Watkins and McQuistan provide depth at their respective positions. Not the worst tradeoff when considering where they were drafted.

Fasano's been a 16-game per season contributor both here and in Miami. Superstar? Nah, but he has/is making some offensive plays--moreso with the Dolphins.

Carpenter hasn't lived up to his draft selection. Another no argument, but the door hasn't slammed shut on him. Yet.

How Whitley can be factored into the evaluation as a negative is a mystery. His level of play cannot be measured since he never had a chance to show what he could do on the field.

Was '06 a great draft? Nope. Good is also a reach, but average isn't and average isn't neither poor nor bad in my opinion.

No. THAT particular year, Jerry Jones made all the draft picks and Parcells was not to blame one bit.
