Just as we thought the Cowboys might catch a break with an NFC East rival losing a crucial piece in free agency, it sounds like the Washington Commanders are preparing to once again dive whole-hog into the veteran market.

The NFL's Jason La Canfora cites team sources who say Washington is gearing up to make a run at several big-name free agents, a strategy they've employed often in the past that hasn't really worked out as of yet.

La Canfora says the Commanders' primary objective will be to sign Jets wide receiver Santonio Holmes, presumably to replace Santana Moss as the No. 1 target for whoever ends up as the quarterback. In one career game against the Cowboys, Holmes had three catches for 82 yards, including a 47-yard dagger in the fourth quarter, when he beat Terence Newman deep.

Hey, let's give Santonio Holmes a huge, fat, longterm contract. What could possibly go wrong?

This one is sure to turn out better than every other free agent spending binge they've had in DC. Afterall, they're going to have John Beck behind center.

but, but what i cant figure out, how in the heck do the skins sign players to big contracts like haynesworth and mcnabb, then have more money to sign more players. How in the heck do they do that and get away with it? :bang2:

They're losing several big salaries off their payroll through free agency or cuts ... Santana Moss, Phillip Daniels, Carlos Rodgers, Clinton Portis, Derrick Dockery, Andre Carter and Donovan McNabb.

Out with the old overrated, overpaid players, in with the new.

Isn't Holmes like one strike away from a lengthy suspension?

Shhhhhhhh!!!!!!

Do you want to scare them off and ruin it?

Yeah, he's already served a 4 game suspension, which is why the Rooneys shipped him out of Pittsburgh. Assuming the new CBA is like the last, the next infraction will be a year long suspension. He's just someone who just constantly finds himself in the middle of trouble, dating back to high school when he admits he was a drug dealer, to college where he had several run ins with the law at Ohio State, to the pros where he's already looking at a year long suspension by the time he's in his 4th year in the league.

He was on his best behavour last year because he was playing for a new contract, but I expect him to return to status quo quickly after someone throws a ton of guaranteed money at him.

Seems fitting. Their fans have to load up to be able to make it through every game.

Signing Santonio Holmes would actually make some football sense for them. Now, the $150 million contract Snyder will likely give him doesn't.

News on disgruntled Commanders

7/13/2011 11:43:10 AM

ESPN blogger Dan Graziano posted news on two disgruntled Commanders. In regards to Albert Haynesworth, Graziano hears that coach Mike Shanahan would deactivate Haynesworth for all 16 games rather than outright release him. Shanahan is not worried about Haynesworth being a distraction for just that reason. Shanahan would trade Haynesworth to an acceptable trading partner for a midround pick but he refuses to just release him so that the Eagles can pick him up for nothing.

Graziano says there is no Haynesworth-level animosity between Shanahan and quarterback Donovan McNabb. He believes Shanahan won't let McNabb "twist in the wind" this summer. Shanahan will try to peddle him around the league to see if he can get anything in return but will release McNabb fairly quickly after the new CBA is ratified so that he can sign with another team.

Yeah, that'll show 'em! $100 million not to play? Brilliant! Make the worst free agent signing in NFL history look even worse.

At least this one they'll get right.

If Shanahan really wanted to be nice, he'd pay for the plane ticket to Minnesota for him!

I am so tired of that quote. It has to be the most cliche' comment in the world right now.

Yeah I actually hate it too, but when it comes to the Commanders, it seems to fit.

I'd have to say "...it is what it is..." is the most cliche' comment in the world right now IMO.

So, you'd just let him walk to Philly?

I have no problem cutting our losses with McNabb. Big mistake to begin with...

A couple of things:

1. They used the uncapped year to unload a ton of salary -- they paid Haynesworth and Hall all of the guaranteed money already. They will have to spend about $45 million in cash this offseason to meet the salary floor (about 90% of the cap, according to reports).

2. Moss wants to resign here, quickly. Maybe Rogers will resign. I'd rather him back than to break the bank on Nmandi Aso...Aso...Asogonnasignsomewhereelse (who is 30.)

3. La Canfora was the beat writer for the Post for years. You'd be wise to take everything he says with a grain of salt. Everything.

Is he suddenly going to become a work-a-holic destroyer in Philly?

No, not at all. But, he'll be playing under Washburn again. And don't you think he'll be slightly motivated to stick it to Shannahan? Even if it's just twice a year. I'd prefer to send him somewhere else, even if it's for a conditional 7th round pick in 2032.
