IRVING, Texas – This doesn’t really seem like a team that can afford to be picky.

Yeah, the Cowboys need help with their pass rush. Dallas finished with 34 sacks as a team last season, which tied them for No. 25 in the league. The rush defense also finished 27th in the league, surrendering 2,056 points.

Clearly, it needs to get better.

That applies to a lot of areas, though. The pass defense was bad. The linebackers weren’t good in coverage. Despite the strides by the offensive line at the end of the season, the running game finished near the bottom of the league. The passing game was missing some dynamism.

Point being: there are a lot of things the Cowboys need to improve. That’s why they went 8-8 and finished in the middle of the league.

I’m not trying to argue for the Dallas defense. It was the worst in franchise history and the worst in the NFL last year. The Cowboys need to spend the majority of their picks in this draft on the defensive side of the ball.

As long as the tie goes to the defense (e.g. great DE vs great wr) I'm ok with this.

There are so many holes on defense though I wonder if this is going to be a legit problem. I don't really keep up with college ball anymore, but I can't imagine there wouldn't be a good DE/DT/LB/S for us at 17th; the Cowboys just need to make sure they "hit" on at least 4 picks.

I wouldn't mind us taking a MLB in the first round, especially if he could play SLB as well. I think Sean Lee could play WLB at a high level.

If there is an offensive player that can rush the QB or stuff the run. Then draft him.

I'm all for BPA in the case of Pryor and Martin if there aren't any worthy DTs available and they are. If there is a monster at DT, run to the podium. If not and Pryor and Martin are available, take one. I like the idea of a young interior makeup of Fred, Leary and Martin with Smith. All young and ready to protect Romo or someone else for a long time. Can't neglect the trenches on either side, ever if you can upgrade.

Pryor is my pet. He brings a nasty disposition, something is that is badly need with this unit. He has range as well and I think he super star written all over him. Charlie Strong's endorsement doesn't hurt either. I only want a DT or these 2 players in the first.

I put up two articles one BPA and the other more need. I don't think the problem is that difficult on who to pick but rather how you rank them. You take the BPA at a position of need unless the BPA is clearly superior to anyone else left to draft assuming they don't have a 'Never Draft' sign.

Dee Ford would not be a reach at 16

OK...So you draft Ford. Who are you gonna bench? Selvie? Ware? I can't see us drafting a guy that would be a part time player. We need someone that is gonna give us snaps...and have an impact.

I'm all for drafting the best player available as long as it is a DT or OG.

On this I might join you.

And it almost certainly will be TE or some soft position like RB. Players fall because they play those positions or have injuries or have character issues, and only very occasionally because they were mis-evaluated at large.

Jace Amaro and Eric Ebron are the best TE's in this class and both expected to be major factors in the NFL.
Amaro is absolutely terrific as a receiving TE.
I mean he was worthy of consideration as the best WR in college football last year... as a 6'5" 265 pound TE....
He is a beast from San Antonio and Texas Tech.

But man the Cowboys can not spend a high pick at TE without calling in the National guard to protect Valley Ranch.

The Cowboys should have about 5 positions where they'd select a walk in start and you'd like to take one of those in R1.
If they are not at the top of your board then you can and probably should trade down to where they are.

An R1 OG would be one of the worst possible picks for improving this team next year.
A guy in later rounds makes sense to help add depth and protect versus injury but Bern is too good to bench and Leary is a waste of excellent value on the bench.

I am fine with either Donald or Pryor.

my top 2 targets as well tho both after a trade down.... which means NFL teams love them too probably and they'll go top 15...
the draft process is a painful thing, lol.

Well, no. I could never expect a first round pick to start over George Selvie.

As it should be. There is no counterpoint.

Exactly right. Teams that try to use the draft to fill needs end up being the most needy teams in the league every year.

Of course need factors in with similar rated prospects but it never should trump BPA.
