Don't get it confused. People that say Hardy wasn't looking for a long term deal are wrong. Of course he wants one. He just didn't think any team would go there right now to the numbers he wants. So this is why they were focused on just one year. Had the Cowboys gave him a competitive multi-year offer with a lot of guaranteed money he's have signed it quickly.

They chose to be conservative. I think it was a mistake. We shall see.

Hoping there is a club option for a 2nd year and wonder if the terms are based on Hardy playing a full season (i.e. his salary is reduced accordingly for each game missed due to the suspension).

If Hardy is suspended for longer than 4-6 weeks or flops, then the FO will he hailed as a genius for doing this contract. Just enjoy this year,,the rest will take care of itself.

You just wish there was a franchise tag or team option (like Melton deal), that would have given us a leg up over other 31 teams to resign him to a long term deal after season. But that's clearly something Hardy did not want. At least we get the exclusive negotiating window to sign him before other teams can formally make an offer.

Greg Hardy signed a one year contract with the Dallas Cowboys on March 18, 2015. The contract carries a base value of 1,311,600. Hardy can earn up to $9.25 million in 53 man active roster bonuses. Because Hardy only played one game in 2014 the cap count is just 1/16 of that number. The bonus will increase weekly against the cap for each week he is on the active roster. Another $1.8044 million is available in incentives. If earned it would make the total contract value equivalent to the franchise tag figure Hardy played on in 2014.

The current cap number is $2,639,725 which represents the $750,000 base salary, the $1,311,600 in workout bonuses and 1/16 of the roster bonus which is $578,125. From the comment above apparently only 1/16 counts against the cap to begin with since he only appeared in 1 game last year. As he earns the additional roster bonuses they will be added to the cap.

With that said, my question would be do we need to head into the season with $8,671,875 of additional cap space to cover the potential additional roster bonuses?

I agree with most of this. I question what "competitive" amounts to, as clearly no team wanted to give Hardy a Watt like deal. Yet Hardy and Drew both know he's capable of that kind of contract and could get it next season. So they insisted on the franchise tag clause and a 1 year deal. They bet on Hardy and will probably reap the rewards next year.

At the end of the day, I'm impressed they got the best pass rusher available. This makes next season a lot more interesting with possible outcomes.

Greg Hardy deal has a no-tag clause. It's either in-season extension or free agency in 2016.

Again, I can not overstate how great this deal is.

If he ends up on some 10 game suspension this will cost us like 4-5 million total and we'd have him back for the playoffs.

If Dallas can't resign Hardy becaus ehe is simply too expensive we likely get 3rd round pick comp in 2017.

All this stuff. And everyone needs to read your post about the cap hit this year being 2.6 and rest on next year's cap. If that's how this ends up accounting, then it's a terrific deal. A week ago if someone posed this deal as a poll to this board, 95% of people would vote yes yes yes yes. The other 5% would be giants and eagles fans trolling.

Also I believe from a PR standpoint it's very good. We can say this guy has made mistakes but he has to earn this money, keep himself in line, and play well for us, we are not committing anything to him.
