Free Agent Series: Dunbar’s Knee Injury Might Cloud Market Value
Tuesday, March 08, 2016 12:52 PM CST
By DallasCowboys.com Report

(Editor’s Note: With free agency beginning March 9, the DallasCowboys.com staff is forecasting the future for five Cowboys currently set to hit the open market. Part 4 spotlights running back Lance Dunbar, who will be an unrestricted free agent. For the full list of Cowboys free agents, visit our free agency tracker.)

RB Lance Dunbar
5-8 / 195
4 NFL Seasons
2015 Impact: 4 games;

Nick: Before last season, I had my doubts on why Lance Dunbar was a lock to make the team. I wasn’t exactly sure what kind of consistent role he would have. Then he catches eight passes against the Giants and you could see the chemistry he had formed with Tony Romo. Even with the backup quarterbacks, Dunbar showed his worth, and was on pace to catch more than 80 balls before his injury. Considering the early-October ACL injury, one would think Dunbar would be ready to go by the start of training camp. But being a free agent, I think we’re starting to hear different reports – which might be part of the negotiating strategy from both sides. I think the Cowboys will sign Dunbar and he will have a similar role as he did last year. I’m still drafting a top running back in the early rounds and I would still keep Darren McFadden in the mix as well. But Dunbar is a unique player, with unique skills and I would make sure he is brought back.

Perfect Cowboys signing. Injury leads to depressed open market value, Cowboys swoop in with a cheap deal and talk about potential!

In what way is his value cloudy? A RB who hasn't doesnt anything in 4 years and is coming off season ending knee surgery equals league minimum and he better be happy to get it or he can head on down the road.

Are you kidding me?? Did you see that last series against the Gents? Did you not see see that great kickoff return to the 18 where he twisted his knee for the team?!?

Smallwood from WVU can do the same thing for the price of a 6th round pick, plus he's not injury prone

There are a bunch of prospects in the draft that could do the same.

In every year.

Dunbar is so replaceable it is not even funny.

Yet we have committed three years to him.

That is a big part of our problem.

We cannot self-evaluate to save our lives.

Doubt he had market value before injury with this being one of the deepest rb drafts.

Draft Elliot as the long term future star RB cow bell.
McFadden can take over back up as well as Dunbars role.

See what Rob Smith can do at RB and / or have him play some FB also.
Possibly resign Turbin, or look for a FA or vet RB.

Dunbar's value is he will be lucky to get paid the vet's minimum.

You're not going to bring in a rookie who can run the WR route tree and pass protect as well at his size. RBs who catch passes at the rate of 80 catches a year aren't that plentiful.

He's a role player whose value is clouded by the injury. It's probably time to move on, but he's going to be a valuable role player for somebody.

And that is still more than a fifth or sixth round pick.

I think we qualifies for the vet salary cap reduction program that Hayden was signed under.

The NFL wanted to protect some veteran jobs so if his salary is 900k it might only count for 500k against the cap.

I was shocked by the creativity of how they used him.

I like TxTech RB DeAndre Washington. Same height, bigger body. Could be used the same way AND could be cheaper
