Jerry Jones: "I Do Not Anticipate A Suspension" For Ezekiel Elliott

CANTON, Ohio – On the eve of his induction into the Pro Football Hall of Fame, Cowboys owner/general manager Jerry Jones took a firm stance behind his embattled running back, Ezekiel Elliott.

Jones spoke to reporters about a number of topics Friday afternoon, ranging from his Hall of Fame career to the speech he will give Saturday night. Chief among those topics was the matter of Elliott, who is still undergoing a yearlong NFL investigation for allegations of domestic violence.

“I do not anticipate a suspension,” Jones said.

The league’s investigation has been ongoing since last July, when allegations against Elliott first surfaced, and it hasn’t faded from the spotlight in the year since. The Pro Bowl running back reportedly met with the league before the Cowboys reported to training camp, and he has also been the subject of speculation throughout this summer, as reports have circulated that he may be in line for a suspension this season.

Jones has staunchly stated in the past that there is no merit to the domestic violence allegations. He has also been sure not to insert himself too much into the investigation, except to say that he did not foresee a coming suspension.

Not sure if we can take that to the bank but I give it some cred. They need to give an answer from the NFL office so we can work the appeal to avoid a suspension for the opener if so.

I felt like what JJ said last night was for the benefit of not sounding like he was undermining the league. Because for the life of me I can't see a actual reason for a suspension even with the wide net RG has.

As to Jerry, when his neck hair is straight on end, he doesn't lose many battles that involve principals that he takes a stand upon.
Exactly..I'm sure Jerry knows how this will end already

Believe it or not, I'm willing to give Goodell some benefit of the doubt on this one. Although in the end, it's his fault that we've resorted to this.

After the Ray Rice fiasco, I've come to believe that there were people in the NFL office that had seen the tape of Rice knocking out his fiance. A big reason why was that when the Rice situation was happening, *I* had been told by a source who has a business relationship with the NFL that there was indeed a tape and that it was as bad as it was. And that NFL reps had seen the tape.

We all saw how the Ray Rice situation made Goodell look grossly incompetent.

With the Brady case, I believe that Goodell was right for suspending Brady. But, we heard reports that Goodell felt compelled to suspend Brady because the Patriots had cheated again and Goodell had covered up SpyGate after telling the owners SpyGate wasn't a big deal. Then DeflateGate turned into a fiasco with Goodell botching that (even though Brady is guilty, the PR was terrible by league).

So now we have EE who is this big star on the most prolific team in the league with an owner who has played a major role in getting football back in Los Angeles and getting the Raiders into a much better location in Las Vegas from Oakland.

Goodell should hopefully start to realize that he can't be sciolistic in this matter and needs to make sure that all the i's are dotted and all of the t's are crossed.

If EE is not suspended, the only issue I would have is the length of time the investigation took. It's not like we're trying to pinpoint international cyber hacking scams. Either he assaulted his ex-gf or he didn't. Either he knocked out a man at a bar or he didn't.

The one thing I would point out is Jerry was specifically referring to the domestic violence and pointed out there were other issues

I think some of the other NFL owners are driving this. Just like with the Brady/deflate-gate stuff. Kraft was under the impression that forfeiting a draft pick and paying a heavy fine would make it all go away but the other owners continued to press the issue because of the Patriots past incidents. I think the same thing is happening to Zeke. Especially since a die hard Giants fan is leading the investigation.

That's pretty much what it comes down to.

And of course Jerry tried to make an excuse for him. He made some comment about how when Zeke goes out into the city he's treated like a rock star, as if that's supposed to excuse his behavior. Plenty of other high-profile celebrities and athletes manage to act like a civilized adult when they're out and about. Zeke being really popular is no excuse. Sorry, Jer'.
