Scouting Report: Quick Look At Rookie DE Zach Wood, Who Signed Tuesday

By Bryan Broaddus Football Analyst/Scout @BryanBroaddus

The Cowboys added a rookie tryout player in defensive end Zach Wood, just before the start of OTAs on Tuesday. Bryan Broaddus studied Wood’s game tape for a quick scouting report of the rookie.

Name: Zach Wood
Position: DE
College: SMU
Height: 6-3
Weight: 282
Draft: Undrafted in 2016

Games Studied: 2015 vs. Baylor, TCU

Report: Read

  • Played as a 3-4 defensive end -- more effort than ability. He will stay square along the line of scrimmage, but he is not an explosive player.
  • He can avoid the low block, but he is not strong enough in the upper body to consistently disengage from blocks. He can get washed out of the play. He is better when he can just rush straight up the field.
  • Wood works hard to try and find the ball, but he is not always successful. He is aware on the screen, and he makes plays on the move.
  • Doesn’t have many pass rush moves and has problems when he has to deal with double teams. Tends to get bounced around inside. Has trouble when he has to finish. Tends to fall off tackles.
  • Plays with a tremendous amount of effort just very limited in overall skill and talent.

Sounds like the staff is beating the bushes in a desperate attempt to procure talent. Well . . . at least, they're kinda, sorta trying -- sigh. This newfangled strict budget consciousness is evidently highly restrictive when it comes to bringing forth somewhat recognizable names. Here's hoping our DL draft picks have us smiling widely.

Meanwhile, Dwight Freeney has a workout scheduled with the Bengals...

heh, seems there would come a time we realize they're just not interested. dunno why. has anyone ever found out which teams are interested in him and biggest reasons why most are not?

just seems if he were the sure fire answer he'd be getting offers, not workouts.

I think age is definitely the reason why most are not, just like it was last year. And why he didn't get a job until October. But the fact is that once he hot a job, he was an ultra-productive part-time pass rusher who had 8 sacks in 11 games, including a strip-sack/fumble that sealed Arizona's playoff win against Minnesota.

All I'm hearing from people around this team is that 'they want yo see what they have in the young guys', which is a bunch of **** to me. They can do that all they want and still add a proven veteran. The two things aren't mutually exclusive.

If one of the young guys miraculously looks better? Fine. Keep him and cut Freeney before the season starts. But even the biggest Homer Simpson on this board can't honestly believe that has a chance of happening.

This team's biggest weakness and need is pass rush, and it's obvious.

and seems obvious, at least to the people making decisions, he won't help. to me, i'd say go for it i suppose. he can't be any worse than what we have which is damning to both us and him. sure i wanna see what the young pups have but sometimes it takes an old dog to teach new tricks. :)

I think the staff feels confident in Mayowa, Lawrence, Russel, Tapper, and possibly Irving at DE.
Don't think they given up on Gregory, but I doubt they are willing to put a lot of their cards on him till he can cut the Mary Jane.

That's 6 DE/DL who the team either just drafted, offer sheeted or claimed recently.

I think if they want a vet, it'll be after week 1.

Why should anyone "feel confident" about anything? What basis does anyone around this team have to feel good about what they've done at the position? Everything they have done has been a failure that's blown up in their face! From Hardy, to Gregory, to Lawrence, it's been nothing but bad.

If anyone is "feeling confident", they're either ignorant or stupid.

Not saying I agree that we are set, just thinking the staff feels they are ok there.

I wouldn't call Lawrence a failure. I guess until more comes out about his suspension, it could of been a real mistake or not/reduced or upheld.

I feel fine with Lawrence. The other side is a question mark and we have a bunch of unknowns, for now.
Hopefully we won't have another bad year at generating pressure from the edge.
For now, I'll hope the staff got it right not going after a "proven" DE in FA

I don't agree either. But I can't see how a group responsible for so much failure can feel ok about anything they've done. Every decision they make in this area should be extensively questioned.

At this point, he's suspended for four games and coming off of back surgery. A procedure more involved than they first realized. Back injuries should never be taken lightly. They've shortened and ended plenty of careers.

I'm not big on placing my confidence on "hope". I've been let down and disappointed too many times by this team.

What Dallas has right now is a bunch of potential.

Mayowa may be a player on the rise. Lawrence looks like he's going to at least be a very good player. Tapper is an unknown. Gregory is an unknown. Who knows on Russell? Is Irving an end or a tackle?

About the only DE we can be certain about is Jack Crawford. In his fifth year in the league, he is what he is ... a contributor.

I'm not comfortable relying on potential. Like you, I'd prefer to have a proven pass rusher, especially with Lawrence and Gregory facing suspensions. We are pretty young at the position right now and it wouldn't hurt us to have one old-timer around to show these young ends how to do it.
