This was equal pessimism (defense) and equal optimism (offense).
In this case at least, why is this a fluff piece?

Why do some of you only see the bad side of things. He basically said the defense will suck and then went on to say why the offense could be good.

What did he say that you disagree with?

That's the flip side. The offense was effective. The defense was bad. Hence, 8-8.

I expect another productive year on offense, too. Though I hope last year's dramatically improved red zone performance was the start of a trend, and not an aberration. We could backslide if it's the latter.

For some reason on this board, if you like Mickey, you get chastised for it. I swear some would rather hear Bayless and Smith and agree with them over Mickey. Even though Mickey backs up his articles where those other two are just idiots.

I disagree
An offense that a poor third down % and is poor at short yardage pick up and can't run when the run is expected is not anywhere near elite in my book

I've already said SC% needs to to up along with decreased penalties and better 3rd down completion and short yardage running as well as running effectiveness.

So I'm not sure what you're disagreeing about since we agree on all the points you raised.

I don't know why you are being difficult

You said "actually we were an elite offense last year....."

I disagreed because IMO an elite offense should not struggle in the areas I outlined

Mickey was the best Cowboys reporter back before he worked for them. He had inside type info and financial details that nobody else seemed to know.

These days I don't mind if he is a homer, but his writing style has become sort of silly. I don't think he puts much effort into writing anymore and sees his job as being on camera for the videos and for the preseason stuff that he does.

On a side note, I'm amazed at how many media guys the Cowboys employ. It does not seem like they get much for their money. Broaddus is really the only guy over there that reports anything interesting. I really wonder what the Cowboys media people other than Broaddus do all day.

Well, then we only disagree with the definition of elite. Offenses which score 27+ ppg and finish 5th in points scored are often considered elite but I won't haggle about it. Actually 27ppg was and maybe still is the gold standard for offenses although they need to improve in all the areas we agree on. If the defense improves 3-5 ppg then they need to score 3-5 ppg more unless they want everyone biting their nails at the finish 3/4's of games.

Despite the temptation I'm leaving this one alone.

So you have faith it will finally come together for the first time since Garrett has been on the Dallas sidelines? That Scott Linehan better be good.

I have faith they will improve on 27ppg from last year. Although we got some short fields our Sc% wasn't bad and our RZ% was pretty good. I expect our Sc% to go above 40% say 42 or so. I think our 3rd down conversion rate will be much better with a better OL and the use of more of the field and more talent. I hope the RZ% improves or stays the same. So it came together last year although there was obvious room for improvement.

Linehan will make the defense's job more difficult by stretching the field horizontally as well as the vertical stretch. He will get us into more favorable 3rd downs by doing so. Murray and Dunbar are going to get 40+ passes this year and one may see north of 70. This assumes they stay on the field which isn't a given obviously. We will have a more effective running game and run snaps will go up some. I hope they will trust the running game more because hopefully the D is a little better.

So you're incapable of judging the merit of a piece because of it's source?

And far from being ashamed at your lack of sophistication, discipline and maturity you revel in it?

Interesting.

I don't get people like you...to your first statement, if you plant potatoes, you get potatoes...Spags is an employee of the cowboys, he ONLY says good things about them...have you not been able to grasp that? interesting
to our second statement, what???? illegal drugs much?

I wouldn't rule out the possibility that the biggest offensive improvement this year, what may take them to the elite level, will be Rod Marinelli.

This. Without a legitimate/healthy superstar on defense, Marinelli is the key to any improvement this team makes this season.

Interesting.

It is no different than those that dismiss any and everything from ESPN

I always look forward to articles from Mickey, when I want the un-adulterated truth about the state of this team.

Even Mickey's not dumb enough, in his pushing the company line, to say our defense was great. Hell, our front office said it. That is the company line.

Mickey's writing style bothers me. Can't quite put my finger on it. Anyways, he does have some valid points if you can navigate through the fluff.
