DCFanatic Opinion: These five guys caught my attention

Posted by DCFanatic at 8/10/2008 9:37 PM and is filed under Player Info,Cowboys News

Every week after a game I plan on picking out five guys from each game and talking about what I saw. Since the Cowboys lost this week you get three guys who didn't play so well and and two guys who did play well.

Felix Jones - He is ready to become an 'offensive weapon' right now! I had been wondering if maybe we were expecting a little too much from him because he's a rookie, but as with most RB's all you have to do is get the ball in his hands and watch him work. The dump off pass from Brad Johnson was the most impressive play for me. When he catches the ball it looks like he's going to get 6-8 yards, but instead his quickness allows him to dart and dash thru the middle of the field past the outstretched arms of multiple defenders for 28 yards. Felix Jones has already shown us he's more explosive than Julius Jones ever was in the open field.

Pat McQuistan - Are you ready for him to be the starting Right Tackle if Marc Colombo goes down? I sure ain't. He was beaten badly on a few plays and he seems to have gotten worse instead of getting better. Now I know he's a backup for a reason, but he is only one play away from possibly being on the field with Tony Romo and company. McQ better get his act together or I think he's looking at being released.

Kevin Burnett - Getting juked out of your shoes is one thing, but getting knocked out of them on the same night you got juked out them is another. What the heck was that KB? Now the worst part. He started out looking like the same old KB we love, a very good Nickel LB who makes sure not to allow short passes over the middle to turn into first downs. But after that it all went down hill in a hurry. Jacob Hester looked like Walter Payton as he ran over KB and this was after he made him miss a few plays earlier. Then to cap off a bad night it looked like he was missing the hole on the goalline stuff as well. I know, I know. I am getting on him pretty good here but it's because I think he's a very good player and I expect a lot from him. Let's hope KB rights the ship against the Broncos next week.

Zach Thomas - This guy is a tackling machine. I knew he was going to be in on a lot of tackles, but this guy is the energizer bunny. He was in the backfield before the ball was even handed off a few times. I was impressed and I can't wait to see this guy taking down RB's all season long. If you can't see how much better this defense will be with him next to Bradie as opposed to having Akin Ayodele in there you need to quit watching football.

Pacman Jones - Rough beginning to his career as a Dallas Cowboy, but I think this was expected. The man hasn't played in the NFL for an entire season. It's not like he was going to come out looking like Deion Sanders circa 1995. Chris Chambers burned him over the middle for a big gain and that's going to happen. At least he was there to make the tackle right after the catch. If that was Reeves he would still be chasing Chambers across the field, lol. He was way out of place when he missed that tackle on Sproles and that's probably a matter of him thinking too much and taking a bad angle. The pass interference was pretty bad because it was pretty obvious. The guy is going to improve so don't go thinking this is the real Pacman folks. By the time we head into Cleveland I would think Pac will be settled down and playing with much more control. Plus he's going to be returning punts which will be really exciting.

Great analysis: fair too. IMO I don't want to see Zach on the field until the Browns game: seriously. I know exactly what he can do, and so does the staff, keep him fresh. Plus, KB, Carp and others need the reps: OBVIOUSLY.

Don't be too hard on Burnett. Hester's one of those guys who will literally break his own neck trying to run through you. Trust me. Burnett won't be the last linebacker who'll underestimate Hester and end up on his kester.

Clarett was not a picture of fitness:

He did kinda look like Deion Sanders to me...well...when he was trying to make tackles he did anyway. Deion never could tackle worth a darn. :D

Yeah I think Hester is a player n @ 235 he will run over a lot of nickel backers. Give KB credit Hester got the best of him but burnett made the stop.

Well, I was thinking of the times that running backs bounced it outside to his side and Deion would suddenly vanish. It was like a magic trick he did because he would reappear right after the play was over.

I think you are going a little overboard on Hester running over Burnett. Yes, Hester did knock Burnett on his keister, but, it isn't like Hester ran over Burnett. Burnett was able to hang in there and still make the tackle on Hester still.

I thought Burnett was terrible. Carpenter was OK I guess but neither was impressive against SD's second team.

Burneet needs to stop the blog if he can't play any better than that.

I also wanted to say that I thought that there were a LOT more positives than just Felix Jones and Zach Thomas.

#1.) Miles Austin - I really was nice to see Miles Austin look like a legit WR and that was also against San Diego's #1 defense for two series. Miles Austin certainly seems to be really stepping up from last year. If he continues to show the hands that he did against San Diego, we found yet ANOTHER weapon at WR, because we already know about his ability to get open deep down field, his problem before has been that the deep patterns was all he could do, and his hands were questionable. Neither of those issues showed against San Diego.

#2.) Our starters absolutely had there way with San Diego's #1 unit, both on offense and on defense. San Diego's #1 unit didn't get ANYTHING going on either offense on defense until we took out our starters, and they were playing their #1's against our #2's.

#3.) Mike Jenkins - Jenkins definately held his own against some very solid WR's in Chris Chambers and Vincent Jackson. Lets not forget that Jenkins is only going to be asked to be our #3 or likely even our #4 CB. After how weak we were at CB after Newman and Henry last year, it is really nice to see our backup CB's hold there own and make a few nice plays (Reeves never made a single play all year) on the ball.

And those are the three biggest positives that I noticed.

The two guys I was really looking out for were Mike Jenkins and Felix Jones, and they certainly impressed me in their first outing. I actually was surprisingly impressed with Tashard Choice as well... he actually looked slick too.
