The NFL network just said he has HUGE potential and can be an impact player like Chris Canty down the road.

Good pursuit speed.

Huge guy at 280 lbs

What a wasted pick..............not a position of need and is a development type.

I wouldve been happier with Gabe Watson. At least then I know you're drafting to a position of limited depth. But another DE. Who gets cut? Ratliff? Ellis? Coleman (or whatever his name is)?

Jason Hatcher DE/DT Grambling St

Strengths
Jason has good size and speed to play the DE position at the next level. He does a really good job defending the run and is just starting to learn all of the pass rushing moves to impact at the next level. He has a good, strong burst off the line and shows enough quickness to pressure the passer off the edge. Jason has the type of build that could handle 20 or 30 more pounds of muscle without it affecting his speed or quickness. He has the talent right now to fit as a DT in a 1-gap system or as a DE in a 3-4 defensive system with the abilities to develop into a complete DT down the line.

Needs to Improve
Jason is just a tadpole right now. He needs to learn a lot of different moves to become a better pass rusher. One thing he does not have to learn is how to defend against the run. Jason has a very good career ahead of him if he keeps working hard.

Bottom Line
Jason looks to me like he will be a better DT than a DE because he is not that flexible and doesn't have really good change direction abilities. He is very good against the run, has a good bull rush and is very good at shooting the gaps and getting into the backfield. However, when he does that, he lacks the flexibility to change direction and wrap up for the tackle. He sure does know how to crate havoc in the backfield, but his strength is defending against the run. He is very good at doing that right now. That’s why I think in a 3-4 as a DE, he would be very good. He does have the type of build that can handle more weight and bulk, so he should also be a damn good DT in a 4-3. Either way, he is an excellent developmental line prospect that could help you right away as a rotation D-lineman until he gets up to speed. This kid has a lot of talent and in the second day of this draft, he's going to be a real find. In the right system (like the one the Bears are running right now) he could come in and impact. He’s about 20 lbs and a few pass rushing moves away from being a hell of a D-lineman for the team that drafts him. I like this kid's potential a whole lot.

FROM nfl .com. Check the Bold, send to NFL Europe?

Hatcher is a player that nothing was known about when grading started on Grambling, but based on his measureables, he warranted a close look and it only took him a few plays before he made a very big hit on the quarterback to grab attention. He is somewhat of a "teweener" in that he is 6-foot-6 and 280-plus pounds, which is excellent for a strong-side defensive end, but he lacks the explosiveness and burst to threaten the corner as a speed/edge rusher, which is why about half the teams are looking at him as a defensive end and half as a defensive tackle. His tendency to play upright and without leverage so often is what hinders his play at defensive tackle. Overall, Hatcher has the ability to become a good starting strong-side defensive end for a team that plays a 4-3 defense or a defensive end for a team that plays the 3-4 defense. He is a raw, developmental prospect that will need a season to improve his play with leverage and become more consistently aggressive with his hands vs. blocks in order to play up to his natural strength, but he should develop into this player if he goes to a team that is patient with him and gives him time to develop. He will most likely need to go to NFL Europe in 2007 to gain playing experience to become the good starting defensive lineman he will eventually be.

He is apparently 6-6 and 283 pounds which means he is a 3-4 DE and not a tweener. Not sure what the coaching staff is thinking here.

We have drafted a TE and DE when those are two of the deepest positions on the team. Not only are those positions deep, but the players are young - Canty, Spears, Ratliff, Ellis, Coleman, Witten, Hannam, Pierce and Ryan. Of that whole group, only Ellis has some age.

The only reason they should even be thinking of DE here is if they have a trade worked out for Ellis.

Parcells, JJ and Ireland are blowing it unless Fasano and Hatcher are uber-talents.

There were still some good OL and FS on the board that could have been contributors and positions of weakness and little quality depth.

i think this is more a way to finally get rid of coleman. also maybe the coaching staff is not that confident with ratliff (sp?)

Got the 88/100, but passed on 56 and 58, according to Rick Gosselin's Top 100 Players. Nevertheless, everyone else has passed on simpson and d. williams, so that has to be saying something. trust in the vision of big bill (even when its hard).

Exactly. I don't know if we could have him in the 6th, but seriously what the ****. We are a team with needs in the starting lineup, not the ****ing depth chart. I am infuriated. I am so happy I didn't take off work for this for the first time in years. So far we've addressed ONE need and aded depth to the only two positions that were already set.

Well just wait until we select a fullback or running back or another TE in the 4th round.

He seems to have the potential to be a good DE in the NFL, but I believe Dallas should have addressed more important needs, such as a FS.

Put me down as very disappointed in this draft. I hope our 4th rounder is a good choice as there seems to be quite a few good players left.
