I think -- and it's not completely clear -- but I think what he is saying is that he was only falling to the ground after the catch because of the contact. If you're not falling to the ground and you have two feet in bounds with control, it's a complete pass. But if you're falling to the ground while securing control of the ball, control has to be maintained throughout the process.
That describes a diving catch attempt.......then you do have to maintain possession when you hit. Dez was not diving for the ball, he jumped, caught it, secured it in his hands and then moved it to his left hand and THEN diving to the goal line to attempt to score. They are acting like all was one act when it actually is a sequence of events culminating in his dive to the endzone when the ball finally came loose but was irrelevant since he hit the ground and the ground cannot cause a fumble. There were also 2 steps and a lunge in between those acts all which occurred on the field of play----so it is a completed pass. And the hit or no hit by the opponent has nothing to do with whether it is a completion, only that he cannot advance the ball wherever he lands.
Anyways, Dez and the Boys got screwed and now the NFL is on spin control trying to justify the overturned call. Their reasons are embellished everyday.
