Hall Agrees to One-Year Deal with Skins

[FONT=Times New Roman, times, serif] Free-agent corner DeAngelo Hall has agreed to a one-year deal with the Commanders, according to sources.
It is unlikely that the team will formally announce the move until tomorrow afternoon. As a rule, players must pass a physical before signing. Hall, who had no medical problems with the Raiders, is expected to take his physical tomorrow.
Hall, a two-time Pro Bowler, was released by Oakland this week and cleared waivers. With Hall, a Virginia Tech product and Chesapeake, Va., native, signing here, corner Shawn Springs could end up playing more at safety. The Commanders lack depth at free safety, and by moving Springs back there, LaRon Landry would be free to wreak more havoc near the line of scrimmage both in the run game and as a blitzer (Washington;s pass rush has been weak and often blitzing linebackers and defensive backs have failed to get to the passer).

whats not to like? We didnt overpay for him. Didnt give up draft picks. Its a 1 year contract. We have a veteran locker room that will put him in line. Hes only 24.

Like? I LOVE that you guys got him. I'm looking forward to Garrett moving TO around and getting him matched up with Hall. That will be sweet.

Because Garrett has demonstrated an ability to put TO in good positions? Not this year he hasn't. In any case, we play man most of the time, so it would be rare to see anyone other than Springs on TO. Of course, that's assuming that Springs can get healthy. I do worry about the health of our corners forcing us to use Hall as anything more than a fourth string CB in dime coverages.

DeAngelo Hall is better than any corner on the Cowboys.

I read that whoever signs Hall better hope he stays healthy this year. If Hall gets hurt this year, Hall's has $16 million guaranteed by the team that signed him, not Oakland. I don't know if true or not or whether Wash changed the contract.

That was only if they picked him up off of waivers. Once he cleared waivers, Washington could offer him a new contract without worrying about his old one.

I agree Garrett hasn't been nearly as good as he was last year but I've at least got to have faith that with Romo and Felix and company coming back that he's realised he's got to be better in this department.

I've also noticed that over the last 3 weeks that teams have begun to actually play legit man to man on Owens (now a big part of that is probably cause it wasn't Romo under center and they didn't fear Brad or Brooks doing anything) and I'd think part of that has to do with the fact that they know with Roy Williams on the other side, instead of Crayton, that it would be suicide to only pay attention to TO.

Even healthy I don't believe Springs can routinely take Owens one on one without over the top safety help and I honestly believe that with a legit second WR that can threaten all over the field across from him now that the Commanders won't be giving Springs, or any corner, as much over the top help. Which, in the long run, I believe is going to be tough on them.

I could be wrong. You guys might run the exact same defense as last time, and Garrett might suck it up just as bad as last time, and our season might just pretty much end on Sunday night. If so then it is what it is and I'll have all this time till next year to hope they get it together. :)

he had a solid rookie season but than went downhill after that. he listened to his own hype, started hanging out with Deion, claiming he was the next Deion. I remember a play last season that defines D. Hall to me. last year against the Saints they throw up a hail mary to try to get some points before the half. what do they tell you to do as a cb when a hail mary is thrown? Answer: KNOCK IT DOWN! but Hall goes for an interception, whiffs on it and a Saint wr caught it and scored. the Falcons went on to lose the game.

LOL. I dont guess I ever saw that play. I just remember things like TO burning him (though as I've said before TO burns loads of corners, pretty much all of them if he faces them more than once in a career), Johnson killing him, Roddy White killing him this year, and Steve Smith being able to draw like 3 penalties out of him on one play and him going to the sideline to scream at his HC after he was the bone head that hurt his team.

Good times, good times.

Right now Hall is either #4 or #5 on the depth chart...the idea that in one week he'll be "matched up" with Owens is asinine lol...There's no "injury" clause for the Skins to worry about, and it's only a 1 year (really 1/2 year) contract at the bare minimum. Raise your hand if you think Leigh Torrence, our current #4 cb, is obviously better than DeAngelo Hall or is so good that he makes signing Hall unnecessary...

Exactly.

If Hall can be good enough to replace Torrence down the road this season--and return a few decent punts in the meantime--then the Skins automatically come out ahead. And his "locker room presence" won't bother the Skins one iota. For starters, if he even slightly starts to act up the Skins have ZERO problem cutting him because they have ZERO invested in him. No draft picks, no signing bonus, no dead cap space to worry about...nothing. Second, it's more likely that the character, maturity and leadership of the Skins' defensive players will change Hall far more than Hall will change the team (Fletcher? Washington? Jason Taylor? Andre Carter? yeah, they're all gonna be corrupted by Hall's presence lol).

This really is a no-lose situation since the Skins already had a pretty decent secondary to begin with. Pretending like Hall will automatically be the #1 or #2 corner without proving himself first both on and off the field is a bit foolish.

Given Halls recent play I can see why Dallas fans would be giddy but let's not lose sight of the big picture. Washington now has arguably the deepest secondary in the East.

Rogers is playing on a Pro Bowl level, Springs is beyond solid when healthy and between Smoot and Hall there isn't much of a drop off in Nickel and Dime situations.

If I was a Cowboys fan I definitely would have welcome Hall if he didn't come with some excess baggage.

The Cowboys secondary has proven to be one of the biggest weaknesses on that team so far and with Pacman out and Newman still having a long path to full recovery ahead Hall couldn't possibly be worse than a rookie thrust in the starting role.

Weather or not he's a bad dude is secondary to the fact that he's not very good.

Maybe Hall would have helped in the Very short term, but Jenkins and Scandrick are going to be players soon.

The defense from earlier in the season WAS Springs. One on One. And then Rogers.

And, again, Springs NEVER took TO in a legit one on one. He had over the top help at all times. There is no way that the Commanders would have EVER been stupid enough to put him one on one with TO.

I think everyone remembers how putting him one on one with anyone in that secondary, without over the top help, worked out for them last year. It didn't.

So, again, Springs didn't take him one on one and he never will.

That was part of the game plan -- I am working on finding the article where Blache explicitly stated that Springs was left on TO...

There's been press coverage with a safety over the top on TO since the GB game, i'm pretty sure the Skins didn't stray to far from what has been working for everyone this season in going about stopping him

I maybe wrong about the Safety over the top. However, how many times did you see Springs or Rogers get beaten by TO? Or a saftey have to make a play?

They smothered him.
