True he has not as bad as a blocker as many think but not as good as many expected.

The overview coming out of combines: "Schultz is a Y-tight end with the ability as a run blocker to help bolster a team's rushing attack very quickly. While his frame could still use more mass, he plays with good technique and play strength at the point of attack and shows an ability to impose his will upon edge defenders if they half-step into the rep. Schultz is a capable and reliable target underneath, but his living will depend on how he impacts the running game. Schultz's limited catch production could drop him a round, but he should be a solid, early starter."

He was billed as a blocking TE and yet has show much improvement in the passing game and it is the blocking that needs to improve. He has bulk up some and has claimed to put the work in his off season to become a better blocker. We will see

I am not an X and O guy to really know to be honest.
Schultz himself said he was gaining weight this past offseason and was going to work on his blocking
so I think he knows it is an area that can be improved.
Hope he does, it's a win/win for everyone.

It's odd. He is decent inline vs DEs but can't block anybody in the open field.

He is not a very agile player.

I could be wrong, but I think his scouting reports coming out said he was a good blocker.

He is not a very agile player.

He whiffs too often in open space. His missed blocks in the redzone really stood out. That said, he's probably better at blocking than my perception.

TE's knowing how to block properly from the NCAA is a dying breed especially with the spread offenses.

He's no prime Jason Witten, but I don't think Schultz is a liability.
Would be nice to have a #2 or #3 TE that was like Hanna/Dan Campbell.

Same thing every time this comes up...

He doesn't get overpowered at the point of attack, there's just too many times he doesn't get a hat on the man they ask him to block and it blows up the play.

Let someone else pay 10 million plus for that.

People far too often like to confuse catch stats with being a Kelce or Kittle type threat downfield. Fantasy football influence is my theory.

I think you hit the nail on the head here. If he gets on you he is competitive.

If he has to dance to get to you it's not so great.

Yah, its usually a few of the apologists blaming one player for so they dont have to hold another one accountable.

Im not buying that Shultz is a good blocker, but he isnt as bad as some say.

Fans or at least some fans just want to hate. they hate anyone getting a big pay check and they knock that player down. so Schultz is next in line as a FA. he is probably going to leave dallas. so fans hate him because of that. now if Schultz was on another team and we would sign him, they would be celebrating that we stole one. because we signed a FA

I agree with the assessment, underrated inline blocker, but struggles in space. I think the issue is more about the type of TE's the Cowboys prefer. They rather have that balanced inline TE then the modern athletic ones we see in today's game.

I think it was more of a technique thing that defenders exploited. They figured out if they could get him moving a direction and punch him in that direction that he couldn't recover. He wasn't resetting his base to be able to withstand the punch. He was fine as long as he didn't have to move out of his blocking stance, but when he did, his base would get narrow and he wouldn't get his feet reset. At least that's what I noticed.

Hopefully, he's spending this offseason studying the technique that was used against him and working to make sure that even on the move, he's keeping a wide base and setting his feet at contact so that he can handle being punched.

I think what others have said hits the nail on the head. He’s good against bigger guys in-line, he’s great setting the edge, but pretty poor blocking down field.

Interestingly Jake Ferguson seemed to be the opposite. He college tape looks fantastic blocking down field, he seems to have an innate ability to find players down field, but lacks a bit of power moving bigger guys in the trenches, that’s only gonna stand out more at NFL level.

Actually, I really like Ferguson on this team because of his down field blocking and how big a feature play action and screen passes have been for the Cowboys offense. Most of his releases seem to transition from blocking assignments into short/intermediate routes. The skill set and what he did in college dovetails nicely.
