What personnel/scheme upgrades could fix this defense?
-I am not interested in trading/releasing any of our defensive playmakers, where we have so few: Parsons, Overshown, Diggs, Bland.
-It is easier to find players that fit a 3-4 scheme then it is for the 4-3 Defense. However, the best defenses are multiple, able to play either scheme depending on the matchup.
-The modern game is more towards the pass. You better be able to hold up in coverage, teams will exploit any weakness.
-DC's have countered the pass attacks with shell coverages, forcing teams to drive the entire field in hopes of forcing FG's.
Personnel Needs:
(Bigger Personnel)
-Another Big DT/NT. This player could play either at NT or 3-4 DE.
-A bigger 3T DT then the 280 LB Osa who cannot hold up. More like a 300 LB type.
-A three down Mike Linebacker with size/length. Not those 225 LB types we like, but rather that 240 LB thumper.
-Playmaker at the safety position
Let's take a look at the Ravens Defense for example:
3T-Madubuike 305 LBS
NT-Pierce 355 LBS
LE-Jones 338
(Basically playing two NT's in their base defense, but a big 3T.)
Oweh Weakside, Van Noy Strongside-OLB Both are listed at 255 LBS
Smith-MIKE he is undersized at 230, Simpson Will 235
Safety-Kyle Hamilton that playmaking Safety
You start with landing an impact DT and a legitimate Mike Linebacker and try to fill in the rest.
