Only way to do this is to suck. SF was built by having a good year, and then a bad year due to injuries. That’s how they got Bosa. We got Dak and Zeke that way, and Micah. Picking in the 20’s won’t cut it.

Rebuilding the defense after signing Parsons to the richest contract for a defensive player. Yea, sounds like something Jerry would do. Just like on offense. Got this all backwards. What a dunce. :banghead:

He believes in reward well and the player will produce. He already gave loyalty to his player and to him that amounts to Daddy coming home. Just being competitive actually lets his team down for ethical and morale reasons.

The Ravens have a LDE at 338 lbs. -- big help in run stoppage. They also have bigger players at the LB spots that are extremely physical. I think Zimmer would likely appreciate that. Gotta wonder if our FO would be prepared to pursue such changes.

The Raven DEF is a great template.
3-4 DEF all the way for me.
Build around Parsons, everyone else expendable.
Don't want to hear anymore about undersized 3T.
I want Big DE's and Big ILB's

-You draft a player like Kentucky's, Deone Walker, 6'6 350 where he could play either as the NT or 3-4 DE. Mazi would play the other spot.
-Could DLaw play the 3T on a 3 man line for the interim, as we develop his future replacement? Do we have to sign a fa starter or make a trade? DLaw might be too small and would have to play OLB.
-Believe Parsons and possibly Kneeland could become your OLB's. Usually the position calls for that 255-260 type of linebacker. We also still have Sam Williams under contract.
-Big Linebackers can be found after the 1st rd of the draft, they usually don't need much development time, either.
-A playmaking Safety is very hard to find, as there aren't many that exist, think Thomas/Bell might be upgrades over our current starters at the position.

Free agency????
It's unlikely, but my point was that Jerry could find a decent impact DT out there if he chooses to via trade, draft, or free agency. Again, it's how badly you want one.

BTW......what are you calling impact? Seems to me after you get past the top 5 or so.......there is not much difference in the next 10-15.

We traded for Hankins and he was decent. He was way better than Mazi. He was just one of several we lost in FA. It would be better to just to take our lumps this season and save our draft picks. The Joneses aren’t going to want to take on veteran salaries so trades are out of the question and it’s not likely we’ll go after a top tier FA after the season unless we trade Parsons and not have to contend with his extension. We need a great DT and the only chance to land one is in the draft.

What “impact” DT’s are available?
Read my last post....your post# 11 says we need an "impact" DT.
It's why I asked what are you looking for from an impact DT. As stated, and this is just me, there 3-5 top players that are ALL-PROs. Then the next 5-10 depends on what you are looking for.

BJ Hill
DJ Jones
Quinton Jefferson
All are 2025 free agents and have done well in the 2-3 seasons. Now it's highly unlikely Jerry will sign either one, I agree with that but that was not my point. My point was the availability of a starting DT out there if we want one but how much are you willing to pay?

If the positions you named aren't pro bowl caliber alpha types it won't matter.

Say if they went for a 3-4 Front as their base defense (against the run), what you want is your three lineman to eat up multiple blocks to keep our 4 backers clean. When you get more into a nickel defense, then you want to find more of a penetrating pass rusher for the interior.

Early on, I have heard this is a really good year for incoming defensive tackles, which is excellent news for the Cowboys at that need position.

Also, I have noticed their are many big linebackers that are expected to come out, not like last year, where the majority were more those undersized weak side types.

We’re looking for a big nasty DT that can wreck some havoc and stuff the run. Someone who can tie up people inside and free up others to the QB. I don’t see Jerry going after a top tier DT with the kind of money it’s going to take to sign a player like that. A player like that would break the bank. The best we’ll do in free agency is a low tier bargain. We’re going to have to depend on the draft to find a great player at the position.

The question is can we find a good one w/o using a 1st or 2nd round pick?

Would you favor bringing Hankins back?

If he was really cheap, but he’s going to be 33 years old. If we’re going to get better on the DL, we have to find a young stud at the position. Stockpile some draft picks and possibly trade up for one.

It depends, as we have seen over the last few drafts, run stoppers outside of the true freaks, usually come off in that 2nd-4th rd range, but if you want a 3T pass rusher, you have to pull the trigger somewhere within the first 2 rounds.

I am fully aware that we also have offensive needs at WR, RB, where day 2 usually is the sweet spot.

It all starts with the line. Look at teams like the Eagles and Giants. They have always had a strong line which covers up for their complete lack of talent behind them. We are trying to cover the weakness of the line with the other positions and it just doesn't work. Especially not in the NFL of today.
