You appear stuck in binary.

I admit there are no stars on this defense right now. That is besides the point.

I'd be willing to bet at least one of these young guys will step up to star status by the end of the season and maybe more. It's pretty much the definition of trying to get younger with players that have a lot of upside vs. paying older guys that may be spent physically.

I think this is one of those deals where its going to get worse before it gets better..

I agree. It's like a huge ship in the ocean you can want to stop and reverse course, but it will look like you are still heading down the rabbit's hole until you slow down and make the long loop around to where you want to head. They need to draft and acquire defensive players. It may take a year or two to really right the ship so to speak.

They are if they are rising. Anyway, many believed (including myself) last year's d-line was composed of falling stars so it evens out this season.

I can speak for myself and as to what my point is.

Apparently you don't understand what I was getting at with my comment on binary thinking.

Binary thinking has nothing to do with the fact that you see a "two-deep" defensive line that doesn't even have four starting quality players on it. How about magical thinking, while we're at it?

I wish I could share the same optimism. Our linebacking corps is probably the worst in the league, and there isn't much depth there. If Durant gets hurt again, we will end up with a guy like Cam Lawrence playing significant snaps, who in my mind, isn't any better than guys like Brady Poppinga or Ernie Sims. It is pretty damning that Durant is clearly the best player linebacker we have.

The defensive line depth looks slightly better on paper, but Hayden is the clear cut starter going into the opener, with his biggest competition being a journeyman in T. McClain, who hasn't started a game since December of 2011. We don't have a starting RE at the moment, as Mincey is clearly more of a LE type or a hybrid DT. At the 3, we have Melton, who hasn't played much in over a year, coming off two injuries. We have guys like Bishop, Coleman, and Crawford, but they are relatively unknowns at this point. Crawford has been pretty disappointing, as they were expecting big things from him.

Fozzy I can sum it up: Horrible defense last year, horrible defense x 2 this year.
Injuries continue. We give up a average of 30 points per game this season and Romo and Witten (sorry Dez, they is too close, like boyfriends cause they are boys and they are friends; you will be frustrated this year though you are a primo receiver) can't keep up.
As to silver lining, it is just whistling past the paved yard.

First of all we are already doing better than last year. We have lost Laurence for 8 weeks and Holloman for the year but last year we lost Crawford and Bass, Ratliff was talking about ligaments pulling off of bone, Spencer had a degenerative knee condition, and Wilcox had a death in the family. Now Melton and McClain may make a liar out of me but as of today they are supposed to play on Sunday. Even if neither can go their backups are much better than anything we had last year.

I think it's debatable that the backups we have this year are much better than anything we had last year. I like their potential, but potential is all we've got right now.

Right now, our line and depth includes a whole bunch of nothing accomplished, Selvie and Melton, who might be limited.
