Lot of talk here and on the team about the DL. So I thought I'd put the roster up as it is on DC today. Then we can discuss the DL overall as well as some of the players.

Right now the DEs are:

Bass
Crawford
Gardner
Lawrence
Mincey*
Rayford*
Selvie
Spencer
Wilson*

The DTs are:

Bishop*
Coleman*
Hayden*
McClain
Melton
Okoye*
Whaley*

Some of the DEs can play DT. Bass and Crawford can play inside. Maybe Gardner esp in SPs. Some of the DTs may be able to play DE in SPs like 3 down lineman although I suspect you wouldn't see it often if at all.

I have McClain and Melton starting at DT. Crawford will start at SDE. I think Spencer will be on PUP. Selvie will likely start at WDE but I'm less sure of that than any other position.

So the roster will likely be Selvie*, Crawford, McClain, Melton, Bass, Lawrence, Coleman*, Gardner*, Mincey*. PS may see Rayford and one of the DTs. There will be more DL on the PS and they may or may not already be here; the latter especially. Someone may come out of nowhere or at least obscurity.

I put an asterisk by those I'm really unsure of. People have penciled Selvie in and that's a decent possibility but he may not even make the roster or he may be a starter at DE. Gardner will make the roster or the PS; likely the former. I don't know Coleman and Mincey well enough but I know the others even less so I'd love to see others' thoughts on this.

On Talking Cowboys yesterday they were mentioning that McClain and Gardner were looking good, but they were rather speechless concerning Mincey. Could take that to mean he has not really distinguished himself.

We won't really know much until the pads come on and preseason games are played but I like what I'm hearing from players and those that have seen the OTA's.

Good thread Jobber, but you need to add Bishop to the list of DT's.

That's the same impression I'm getting. He's apparently a vocal guy in the locker room. Lot's of questions.

Is Crawford a guy who is going to be able to generate a pass rush against offensive tackles?

I don't know if he has that quickness and bend to do so... Unlesshe is going to succeed by bull rushing.

I thought maybe he would fit in best as a 3.

I think he's more suited for the SDE. He's not going to get run on like Selvie. But you're right he's not going to be like Ware was or hopefully like Lawrence. But he has a great bull rush and a good swim move. Think Spencer but stronger and not quite as fast. He will get snaps inside as will Bass.

Looking forward to his (Crawford) 1st ever Cowboy Sack

Agreed.

I don't see Crawford being a 1 sack per 100 snap guy at DE.

They said Crawford may move inside on passing downs. Even if he doesn't get the sack, he's good at collapsing the pocket and the QB won't be able to step up.

McClain has to surprise and Melton has to be his 2012 form for these guys to have a shot. Realistically I think this is a 2010 Offensive Line type of problem that is several first round caliber players away from being competitive. But if they are to have a shot it is with those interior guys playing excellent so that the B-List of defensive ends can make some plays off the edge.

Some of the ends will likely need to play both sides, just not sure which one, although Selvie is a former right end so he is a likely candidate. Spencer could if he returns. Spencer and Whaley go on PUP. I think Hayden will get beat out by Bishop. They probably keep 10

IP-interior pass rusher

Crawford LE/IP
Selvie LE/RE
Mincey LE/RE?/IP
Gardner LE/IP
Rayford LE/RE?/IP
Spencer LE/RE

Lawrence LE
Wilson LE

Melton 3T
Bass 3T
Coleman 3T
Okoye 3T/1T
Whaley 3T

McClain 1T/3T
Bishop 1T/3T
Hayden 1T

Crawford -- Melton--McClain--Lawrence
Selvie--------Bass----Hayden----Wilson
Gardner---Coleman-Bishop--
Mincey-----Okoye
Rayford---Whaley
Spencer

They want to play Lawrence on the right.

Melton
McClain
Bishop*
Coleman*

2 from this list:
Gardner
Rayford*
Wilson*
Bass
Hayden*

PUP:
Spencer
Okoye*
Whaley*

Gardner is a SDE. He is probably not big enough to play inside unless we're talking SPs. I think he will likely go to the PS. Great effort but short arms, not big, not quick, not fast. Good cones and vertical.

Gardner is a difficult player to project. He was best as an inside type rusher in college. He weighed 262 at his Pro Day which is obviously small for a DT; however, my guess is that he lost weight for the combine. I think he probably played in the 270 range. That would be big enough to be Nickel pass rushing DT.
