Defensive Passer Rating

Marinelli doesn't have a coverage scheme. We have gone from cover 3 to man hybrid to cover 2 now back to cover 3 as the pass coverage coord has evolved.

Marinelli has adjusted schemes through the years, depending on the players. This is true.

Although there is technique within the scheme that has seemingly been consistent. I don’t know the numbers on it, but Marinelli seems to have his corners play off their man rather often and not employed a lot of man press. Now, this comes as no surprise given Marinelli’s history. He wants his secondary to play off and then break on the ball to force turnovers.

But this has lended itself to allowing a lot of easy completions on underneath throws for the opposing QB’s.

Marinelli is the classic, bend but don’t break defense guy. This works well when the defense forces a lot of turnovers and plays well in the red zone.

The main problem with our defense has been that they have been “bending and then breaking” largely in part due to a lack of turnovers.

Marinelli has no problem letting a QB throw for 300 yards, in the hopes the defense can force a couple of interceptions. The problem is, they haven’t been getting those interceptions nearly often enough.

Exactly I can't edit my post from before. It might change from more cover 3 to more cover 2, but his bend don't break idea is exactly the same. And its a pray and hope the QB makes a mistake defense. Doesn't force any turnovers hence why we are always bottom in the league in ints.

I learned from Percy, the resident analytics expert, that DPR is the most important correlative stat to winning in the NFL and virtually unmatched in winning playoff games and nothing else comes close. As an example here's a snapshot.

2017 Best DPR

Jacksonville
Los Angeles Rams
Philadelphia
Baltimore

2017 Worst

Cleveland
Oakland
Green Bay
Houston

Only one team in NFL history has EVER won a SB with a bottom 5 DPR? That was the Packers with Aaron Rodgers. The reason it's so relevant is that it is impossible to get by good QB's in the playoffs with a bad pass defense.

As Percy has stated many times, it's the reason Tony never really had a chance at a Super Bowl.

We need to just keep pointing this out over and over until it’s commonly accepted as the reason why our team has had limited postseason success here lately.

Packers were #1 in DPR when they won the Super Bowl beating #2.

The worst that I can recall is NYG who were like #21 in 2011, but were 3rd best in the playoffs (also best in PPG allowed; 14ppg would have been the #1 scoring defense if they played that way during the regular season).

I completely agree with this thread and the impact of DPR. But if you look at each playoff loss individually the past 20 years (there aren’t many games to look at unfortunately) what do you see that drive the loss?

Poor dpr?
