News: Deji Olatoye gets start for Cowboys, a telling sign on Byron Jones

More of a telling sign for Claiborne and our scrub DB coach. I rewatched the game earlier today @Zordon Peep Olatoye's footwork on the redzone interception. Bad throw or not, it was absolutely flawless technique and its what I've been dying to see from our corners every week the last 2-3 years. Let Claiborne or Carr have been in on it I guarantee their head never gets turned around to make the play.

Yea,this reminds me of when Campo was ruining our CBs by teaching them to play the player and never turn around and look for the ball. After he left, Scandrick took the next step.
It's telling when new DBs come in and get INTs IMMEDIATELY while Carr and Co take months to get picks. Get our DB coach out of here before Jones gets ruined.

Not what Jerry said when he blew a 1st and 2nd rounder on him.

Only thing, that statement was being used by a lot of evaluators at that point in time, and not just with Dallas.

Well we're still the only ones who gave up a 1st and 2nd rounder for him.

I wouldn't mind Byron Jones as our FS next year. Especially if we can get a solid CB in the draft, which from the looks of this draft class, we should be able to. Lots of CB depth in this years draft class. Can get a decent guy as late as the 3rd round, depending on what you're asking him to do (press, man, zone, etc).

I could be wrong, but I really don't want to see Byron Jones at FS... He tackles good for a CB, but I don't think his style of play is physically imposing enough for him to excel at FS... I'm not too impressed with him as a CB thus far either, so really I don't think it's a bad idea to just keep using him as a dedicated TE stopper... I think we would be a lot better off with Gipson, Berry, or Weddle playing FS rather than Jones... If we dont get a FS in free agency, then I hope we consider drafting Jalen Ramsey with our first pick...

Charles Woodson won DPOY in 2009 playing that hybrid Safety/Slot CB/Nickel LB role. It <can> be an invaluable position on the field.

In many ways, I see that position as being ideal for Byron Jones.

As I said mentioned before -- the main thing Jones has to get better at is ball awareness.

DB in the NFL is a hard transition from college. Most guys take a couple years to really acclimate themselves. I personally think that DB is the hardest position to learn coming from college except QB.

All things considered, Byron Jones had a very good rookie season. He should only get better. He's extremely athletic and very intelligent. Give him some time. He'll get to the point where he can play proactively vs reacting.

I'd love for the Cowboys to sign Gipson or Berry, but the chances of that happening are very slim. Weddle has not been good since 2012, and he's on the wrong side of 30. I'll pass on him.

Byron Jones has all of the tools to be a very good FS. FS isn't a position that requires someone be physically imposing, IMO. Give me a guy that can defend passes, cover WRs, and get picks. I'll pass on the hard hitting safety in today's NFL.

Good posting here...

We've taken just one in the last 7 years. Byron Jones will be a FS.

That's the way I see it also. The staff reportedly believes Jones is best suited at safety. It's very likely that another CB (or two) is on their wish list if Carr and Mo are history.

ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. -- The Cowboys provided another indication Sunday of where they plan to play first-round pick Byron Jones next season.

Jones started at safety despite cornerback Morris Claiborne being inactive with a hamstring injury. A week ago, Jones started at cornerback with Claiborne out and gave up a 43-yard pass in the final minute that set up the Jets' game-winning field goal. Jones said after the game he should have been playing off instead of being in press coverage.

With Jones at safety, the Cowboys started undrafted rookie Deji Olatoye at cornerback in place of Claiborne.

Olatoye came up with a big play in the final seconds of the second quarter. The Bills had third-and-2 from the Dallas 5, and quarterback Tyrod Taylor lobbed a pass to the right corner of the end zone.

"Any time you get a takeaway it's a big thing," Olatoye said. "It's really an honor. I just made the play when it came toward me."...

Or......they want to see what Olatoye can do.
