Delpit - 4.39 40

If the doomsday scenario happens and there are only two quarterbacks picked before the Cowboys pick, he should be in consideration. His range is phenomenal. Delpit can cover up for average cornerback play.
If this situation happens trade down with New England and pick up a 3rd round pick.

Agree, and it drives me crazy. That why they end up desperate and willing to trade sometimes multiple (first) round picks for earl thomas and jamal adams
Well the chances of you drafting a Earl Thomas is slim. Even if you have safeties you’d get rid of them for a player of Earls caliber.

They are certainly slim when you dont give yourself a chance . More likely to get a great one in top round that schlubs in round 6

A clear attempt to stop the bleeding and his free fall in this draft. His stock has been plummeting.

I don't see a problem with physicality in tackling. His issue appears to be over-running tackles and taking bad angles.
That's probably a better description.
I call it physical but mostly mean he is a tall safety that seems to be diving or playing high, no middle ground break down and tackle.
He's not scared of contact by any means, but he isn't really a good tackler at all.
He's either too patient playing up tall or too aggressive diving at the lower body.
The bad route thing and playing tall remind me a lot of Byron Jones.
I wonder if Delpit ends up at CB for SEA or someone running that bigger CB scheme.

He is really good with his hand fighting and has the speed to cover well.

I know y'all are gonna kill me, but I wonder if this kid could play CB? With that size, athleticism, speed...……………..the lack of tackling leads me to think some team may look to move him. That's what Seattle did with Tre Flowers - he was a S all 4 years of college, then Seattle drafts him and makes him a big CB. He's started all 30 of his NFL games at CB. Just a thought...……..

Two years ago, LSU was playing in the Fiesta Bowl and they were practicing nearby in Scottsdale. Coach O invited our staff to attend. He had recruited one of our best players at USC and was in the process of recruiting (and signing) our top defensive lineman from 2018. I was working on my thesis, which at the time was regarding the athleticism of defensive backs versus all other athletes in professional sports. Anyway, Coach O and Coach Dave Aranda (now HC at Baylor) were really cool about my project and I got to shadow the LSU DB's around at practice and then had some access to them at the Fiesta Bowl.

Delpit was a sophomore at the time and he had elite movement skills. His quickness is evident in everything he does and he's super competitive. In 1-on-1's he matches up with the LSU top receivers instead of tight ends or running backs like the other safeties. He's just as smooth as the LSU corners and showed great feet and hips. He's not Isaiah Simmons, but he's still a freak of an athlete for someone his size.

The tackling in 2019 has me worried like everyone else, but I really feel that was due to him playing through the ankle injury.

Honestly, I won't be upset if we take Delpit at 17. If we can get him in the second, I am ecstatic. If we trade back in the first and still get him and add picks, that would be great too.

I'm a huge fan of Delpit around 20. I'm not the biggest at 17.

Depending how the board falls and teams willing to move forward, I'm ok going back and getting Delpit. Thing is though, how does the front office view Ha Ha and Woods? What about Wilson? If you draft safety Day 1, Ha Ha and Woods are likely gone as Wilson and the rookie would likely be your future starters.

I agree. I prefer Delpit in the 20's more than at 17. But if no one wants to trade back and he's the guy, I have no problem taking him at 17. Ha Ha is on a one year deal, so he doesn't affect how I draft. There's no guarantee Wilson replaces Woods.

I was looking more so into the future. Woods and Clinton-Dix will be FA after this season. Could be a Delpit / Wilson combo at Safety next season

Funny that Cam Dantzler also ran a great time.

4.38--That's quite a bit better than his 4.6 at the combine.

Something is off here. I wonder if he wasn't right at the combine? I wonder if he ran a 38 instead of a 40 today.

Lol. Could be.

But he did have a high ankle sprain that's likely finally healing since the season ended a few months back.

Don't really want a safety in the first round. We have bigger fish to fry

I saw on a bleacher report article they said Delpit can fall to the 5th safety taken. I thought that was bonkers.

Great post, thanks
