I see a tag in his Christmas stocking unless he is willing to take below market value
With the injury history, one great year and other issues, I think a long term deal at market value is too risky
I don't think he is playing better because it's a contract year as some have suggested but the fact he's healthy and more developed
Tag him and see if he can stay on the field. You can always sign him the next year

This. Tag him, and if someone offers a 1st rounder or more, take it and let him go. I love the season he's having, and hope he keeps it up, but his back could be an issue at any time. Backs typically don't stay healthy long term (just ask Romo and Aikman).

He will
Probably in the form of a franchise tag but it's mighty good money. And if he repeats his performance he may even get a long term deal
No matter what he is about to make a whole lot of money

I could see us working hard to get him signed.

Traditionally, Jerry does not like the franchise tag. They used it with Spencer but that was one of the few times we used. Spencer never had elite production, he was just a good, solid player we wanted to rent for another year or two. If Lawrence finishes this season with elite production, Jerry may open up the pocketbook considering our cap situation is solid for the next few years and we are already paying so little on the defensive side of the ball.

I hate to burst your bubble on this one but it will be only a one year rental. Lawrence will cost too much down the road.
The Cowboys will have a lot of hard CAP decisions in the next few years.

Martin is coming up.
Dak is right behind and you have to clear 20 million at least for him.

This will be interesting seeing Stephen Jones getting players signed.

It's a good position to be in with good players to keep.
With the good drafting they have done recently it only get's harder.

This began looming once we became a good drafting team as you correctly stated.
Right beside Dak is MCollins,JSmith ect ect.
They will to draft in the future according to who they let walk,
There will be some hissing and moaning [from me]

If, and that is a big IF, DLaw stays healthy and is a demon this year and next year under a franchise tag, he will be paid by Jones. they will somehow make it work with some creative cap manipulation. The salary cap will be more and other issues may be favorable too by that time. we shall see, but if he continues this kind of play, no way he is let go.

He's only an unrestricted free agent if he doesn't get tagged.

The whole point of not signing other teams' free agents is to be able to afford your own. If he keeps it up, Lawrence will break the bank. Let's hope he does, because it'll be a nice problem to have.

I do wish we'd gotten Martin done in the offseason now, though. We've only got the one franchise tag, and if Martin wants, he can hang us over a barrel and get Lawrence to FA. I think both those guys want to be here, though, so maybe it won't matter when it's all said and done.

You might want to get acquainted with the real numbers. There is no bubble to burst. We'll be fine.

DLaw is an easy decision. You tag him. Yes, because his health and to see if it he can be consistent.

But also because we have several young DEs on this roster that may step up as well. Irving, Tapper, Taco, Moore. And I wouldn't be surprised if we took another DE in the first 3 rounds this year.

Develop the young guys during his franchise year and you may be able to just let him walk and use that money more efficiently at an area of need.

Zach Martin will be an UFA in 2019. Dallas opted to pick up his 5th year option so he is under contract for 2018 @ $9.3M.

Dallas has a little over $11M in cap space now, that can be rolled over into next years cap so we'll have $16M to spend.

Keep in mind cuts or restructures can free up space too.
