I heard Hostile say on dcfanitic's show tonight that at one point in the off season Thurman was a "free-agent" 2ndary coach. I searched for him on ESPN and he was w/ Ryan and the Ravens and now w/ the Jets. Since Jerry likes to hire coaches w/o any input from the HC why doesn't he bring in Thurman as the DC and let Wade just be the HC? He could let Dave Campo go as well.

Some guy also wanted to bring in Butch Davis as HC, but I've heard (from Spags I think) that it was Davis who insisted we take Shante Carver w/ our 2nd rnd pick, in '94 was it? and that Jerry would never have him back at VR in any capacity, ever.

But if Thurman is responsible for the development of Ed Reed and Chris McCalister, couldn't he do something w/ Jenkins and Scandrick?....

PS Is Dale Hansen still around w/ Coach Joe on Sunday night? We used to be able to see them on TXCN but not anymore...

Hansen and Coach Joe have a show, Sunday nights 10:30 on WFAA
here in DFW area. I have no idea if they are on TXCN.

I would love to have Thurman here in any capacity.

My biggest complaint about Jerry Jones is the blinders he has on to the team prior to him buying them in 1989. It's like he does not see them.

Take the Ring of Honor for instance. He waited way too long to induct Tex Schramm. The man was one of the greatest innovators in NFL History and along with Tom Landry was an architect of how the entire NFL now operates. At one time the computerized stuff was unique to Dallas. Now just about every team embraces technology in every way that they can. One exception I have heard is Belicheck. He still insists on pencils and notepads to draw up Xs and Os. Personally I shudder to think how much better he could be if he embraced the technology available like he did video tape.

Jerry waited too long on Cliff Harris, Rayfield Wright, and Bob Hayes for the ROH too. He's still waiting on Drew Pearson, Ed Jones, Harvey Martin and others. It is wrong and I don't appreciate it at all. Why did Tom Landry wait 5 years but Emmitt had no wait at all? Don't get me wrong, I love Emmitt, but Tom Landry deserved that honor (no wait) more than anyone.

Dennis Thurman I don't see as a DC. Maybe I am wrong on that. Wouldn't be the first time. I wish I could see him as our Secondary Coach. Dennis Thurman's players do amazing things.

Ronnie Lott credited Dennis Thurman with teaching him how to play DB in his HOF speech. It's true. Please go to the HOF page and look it up if you doubt this. They were at USC together. Lott was only the greatest Safety to ever play the game.

Danny White paid a similar tribute to Dennis Thurman when he nicknamed the Cowboys secondary, "Thurman's Thieves." Now the Cowboys had a DB Coach on Landry's staff. Why wasn't he given that moniker? It's simple, Dennis Thurman was that good at what he did and what he taught. There is not a doubt in my mind that Dennis Thurman would have been on Landry's staff at some point if Jerry had not arrived.

Here are Thurman's Thieves and how they arrived in Dallas.

Dennis Thurman...11th round pick
Michael Downs...UDFA
Bill Bates...UDFA
Ron Fellows...7th round pick
Everson Walls...UDFA
Victor Scott...2nd round pick
Dexter Clinkscale...UDFA
Ricky Easmon...UDFA

The only one who was mislabeled was Easmon. He never swiped a pass in Dallas and only played one year. But he was in the poster. I wish I could find the picture of Thurman's Thieves.

In 1985 when they got that nickname it was after Intercepting Joe Theisman 6 times in one game.

Thurman became the leader of the DBs in 1980. That year they improved from 13 INTs the year before to 27. 1981 they had 37. In 1982, the strike shortened year, they had 15 in 9 games. 27 in 1983. 28 in 1984. 33 in 1985.

Thurman left in 1986 and the production dropped to 17, led by 3 of his thieves. The Baltimore Ravens improved dramatically when he arrived to coach their secondary. The Jets are seeing some benefits.

When Todd Bowles left Thurman wanted to come here to be the DBs coach. I will never forgive Jerry for not jumping all over that. Same with the Dan Reeves fiasco. Quality guys from pre-Jerry days that he just doesn't seem to have a good enough appreciation of.

Thanks for all the input. Very sad that Jerry is so self-defeating, but since the slide began in the late '90's he is the only thing that has remained unchanged. It's got to be him...

I never saw the appeal in Campo as a coach. He had remarkable talent when he was the secondary coach. He had a so-so defense as a D-Coordinator here despite having pretty good talent. He then becomes the head coach and the defense was pretty poor and couldn't sack the QB. Then goes to Cleveland and has a lousy defense as D-Coordinator. Goes to Jax as a secondary coach and gets ran out of there after a few years despite having some talent there.

In '07, when Bowles was still the secondary coach we had 19 picks. And that was with Jacques Reeves starting at corner and Nate Jones playing the nickel. In '08 with Campo as the secndary coach, we increase our sacks by 13 and we get only 8 picks. Now in '09 the secondary can't play man-to-man at all. The pass rush isn't perfect, but it's not nearly as bad as people are making it out to be. But our secondary leaves guys so wide open so early in the play, that's why we can't sack the QB right now.

Where are the Campo supporters now??? Been a Thurman booster for a long while now, but I agree w/Hos, he may not be DC ready. Of course, neither was Stewart.

I would also like to have Ken Norton as LB coach, his players would kill for him. Not interested in hardasses so much, but coaches who are invested and make their players feel the same. Thurman and Norton have been impassionately credited w/improving players.

NOTE: As for the ROH wait for Coach Landry, I don't think Jerry had much choice. Landry refused to be honored until Staubach interceded over 4 years into Jerry's ownership of the Cowboys. According to the stories I heard at the time, Jerry wanted to induct Landry into ROH almost immediately after purchasing the Cowboys, Landry wanted nothing to do w/Jerry's Cowboys. Schramm is a different story. Anyone know what Schramm did to get on Jerry's bad side?

Good post Hos and i feel ya. Never mind his Dallas ties, the dude can really coach and he should have been at the top of the list.

This is off topic but i know how you feel about Jason, but i can't help but worry if he's handed the reins will Jerry allow him to pick a Defensive staff or will it be hand picked by Jerry?

I know if guys like Shanny or Holmgren were hired they'd have controll over most of the hires. With Jason i'm not sure.

I think if we get Garrett as HC - or hire some young guy that hungry just like Jimmy was

or Ron Rivera

or say Jim Harbaugh
In January 2009, Harbaugh was confirmed to have been interviewed by the New York Jets for the head coach position], although the job was eventually offered to Rex Ryan[6].

keep Herring as DC -
move Dat to LB coach
keep Sheman as WR coach
keep Peete as RB coach

an maybe keep Houck as line coach because the line has come around a little since hes been here

and maybe Ken Zampese is in his seventh season as Bengals quarterbacks coach. He has guided the development of Carson Palmer into one of the NFL's elite passers and team leaders. as - OC

or Hue Jackson OC

and fire Wade - Campo - Maxie - Wade Wilson - Wesley Phillips - Grantham - Juraszek

Juraszek cause there some reason our guys are getting tired at the end of a game

an please fire Wade Wilson because I think he held Troy back as a QB when Troy was QB

and Give Ozzie Newsome a Blank check to come here an be GM

hell why stop there lets raid thier scouting dept also

D coordinator at San Diego .....so JJ and Red would have to give him "ASSt. Head Coach" title as well as D.Coord. and a butt load of money right?I guess that could be arranged as SAN Diego is notoriously cheap.....he'd be a solid choice IMO.

BTW: what should this tell us about Wade, we're discussing the staff for next season after the 2nd game. Oh well........

I didn't know Ronnie Lott said that about Dennis Thurman. I am going to definately look that up.

Also, I thought I gave you the Thurman's Thieves picture? I will repost it on here, just give me a minute.

Do those exist?

YES. There is still a vocal minority who think Campo is an exemplary secondary coach and a highly thought of defensive coordinator. They may be hiding right now, but they are out there. :D

Amen with the way Jerry treats the Landry era, he shows them very little respect. I was just thinking this the other day.
