The way I'm rating need in each position going forward is based off the players we currently have who could start for most teams in the NFL. The following positions in BOLD should be addressed in the draft.

Offense:

QB: Tony Romo/Jon Kitna
HB: Marion Barber/Felix Jones/Tashard Choice
FB: Deon Anderson
WR: Roy Williams/Patrick Crayton/Miles Austin/Sam Hurd/Isaiah Stanback
TE: Jason Witten/Martellus Bennett
LT: Flozell Adams
LG: Kyle Kosier/Montrae Holland
C: Andre Gurode
RG: Leonard Davis
RT: Marc Colombo

Defense:

CB: Terence Newman/Mike Jenkins/Orlando Scandrick
SS/FS: Ken Hamlin/Gerald Sensabaugh
ILB: Bradie James/Keith Brooking
OLB: Demarcus Ware/Greg Ellis/Anthony Spencer
LDE: Marcus Spears
DT: Jay Ratliff
RDE: Igor Olshansky

Again, the above depth chart does not include players who are mainly stop-gap solutions. This, all said and done, though, will be the face of the Cowboys going into 2009. How confident are we that these players can make a push to end the play off drought?

Bowen and Hatcher do pretty well at DE rotation, especially Bowen. We do need some depth at DT badly with Tank gone.

I still don't know how we look at OT since I have no idea how Free is progressing. Guard is a problem unless Holland can start and stay healthy then Kosier can back up either side and he is better than people give him credit for around here.

I still feel that WR is an area of concern and needs to be addressed. I'm ok with Williams, Austin and Crayton but after that we are paper thin. I like Hurd but he is an overachiever with limited natural ability that doesn't really give me confidence. And Stanglass will always be a tease with his athleticism but in the limited playing time he will get between injuries I don't think he will ever see the developement he needs.

The rest I pretty much agree with you on.

take the best player available who is not a QB, RB, or TE.

We will likely take a QB 5th or later. Developing a young backup is really important. I could see an RB later if he's a KR/PR as well. TE isn't out of the question as we need some competition for #3.

Other than that I agree with you.

I hope you dont mean to replace all those starters with rookies.

Cool lets address 80% of our line in the draft, four rookies protecting Romo. Hey Tony your medical benefits paid up?

I think some people just open their mouths without realizing what comes out.

Ive got one word for your post

I believe that he was referring to positions where the BACKUP position needs an upgrade...not the starters. I can't say that I disagree either; many of our backups are questionable.

I agree 100% with that. Back ups need a major upgrade, but we cant have pro bowlers in every spot, Im happy with Holland as the back up guard. Heck do we even have a back up center?

I'm sure that is what he meant unless he is just another spurned Cowboys "fan" which seem to be running crazy around here.

Sorry for the confusion. I'm not sure how this was misconstrued, but, I am not for replacing starters. I was referring to the back-up positions. My apologies if I misrepresented my intent here. Mainly I'm just bored and did this to have a basic outline for how the Cowboys will draft. If you count the players I listed and add 2 to that final number for the punter and kicker, this accounts for 34 players of the final 53 man roster, which leaves 19 positions up for competition.

Along with this I had put together a draft board matrix which showed each bolded position and the perspective players that would be ideal and likely available for each corresponding pick. For instance, at CB I liked Sean Smith in the 2nd, Mark Parson in the 3rd, Domonique Johnson in the 4th, Kevin Barnes late in the 4th, Jason McCourty in the 5th, Lardarius Webb in the 6th, Brice McCain late in the 6th or Bradley Fletcher in the 7th. Now, so there is no further confusion, I am not saying one way or another what position should be addressed 1st. On the contrary, I did this moreless for myself to have an idea of how the Cowboys could still have a decent draft acquiring BPA. See the following link for the complete matrix. Each players name is hyperlinked to their scout report.

I believe Proctor is our backup center. I hope he is better at that than guard.

I think that they want to keep him because he can play both guard and center - although not very well. I have not heard anything about Holland's progress, but I have to assume that we are counting on him this year.

It's amazing that we haven't been able to develop even one solid backup lineman recently, hopefully we have some good draft picks this year.

I hope we replace him (Procter) with somebody like Eric Wood.
