Derrick Harmon film review

50+ pressures to lead DTs in CFB for DTs and one of the few with a run and pass rusher grade over 80.

Every year I have about 5 dudes that are my guys and he might be the top of the list for me.
I've moved over into the Nolen camp at 12, but I won't be upset if we have Harmon higher.

Might be, and some list him more as a 3-tech type anyway. I just want some bulk if we go with Nolen (305) or Harmon (310). Need guys we can rotate that aren't washed up or JAGs. I'd probably even take three in the draft, like Parcells did when we drafted Spears in the first, Canty in the fourth and Ratliff in the seventh. Stock that line!

BP built a very good D line in one draft with Ellis as the holdover. then went three four and Ellis became the other OLB
he drafted Jason Hatcher the next year and he was good also

Yeah, I could see the Joneses dismissing what he did since he was switching over to the 3-4, but he valued the trenches when he came in, even signing Jason Ferguson to be his starting nose. We also found Stephen Bowen as a UDFA. I wouldn't even mind Osa walking if we were that dedicated to retooling the DL, especially if signing Odighizuwa means we are going to ignore or downplay this DT-heavy draft.

I honestly don't wanna bring Osa back, not for what it will cost. Osa is a pressure player with 8-9 sacks and average to below-average run defender. Why sign him $20-23M and STILL have the same run defense issues from last season? Not to mention, Mazi ( 1st round pick ) is a mode ( poor run defender ). Now you have a former 1st pick and $20-23m player playing together.......

I would much rather draft a top DT, let Osa walk and use his money to sign a top-end WR

he has gotten just over four sacks in his best year so where do you see him getting 8 or 9?

Because we might still not draft a first-round DT, or worse, draft one that performs like Mazi has up to this point. Odighizuwa is a very solid rotation player, and that costs more than you'd think, but paying him should not be used as an excuse to not try to get better.

I prefer that we transition tag him this year since we do not have a qualified replacement in hand. That will cost us ... around $19 million, but it gives us a chance to actually draft a player(s) to try to usurp him and make it unnecessary to give him a costly long-term deal. The difference in the transition tag and franchise tag at DT is about $4 million, I believe, but I think the transition tag will be enough to retain him or at least learn his market value before deciding whether to match any long-term deal.

I understand this but how does it fix the run issues.......that ranked near the bottom?

Bring in more DTs. Odighizuwa should be part of a strong rotation. It shouldn't be Osa, Mazi, some old guy and some journeyman.

He is one of the top pressure DTs, though. That's why he'll get paid well.

G....think about what you saying......paying a player ( $18-20M ) as a rotational.

We don't know if he'll be rotational. He may end up playing 80-90 percent of the snaps depending on how the draft picks turn out. You can't just count on draft picks succeeding. Dallas has done that too often in the past. It needs solid players in place and for the draft picks to show that they should get more playing time than those players.

We don't even know how the draft will fall. What if a player like Abdul Carter somehow was available at 12? (We say that won't happen, but we drafted Parsons at No. 12, so you never know what can happen.) Would we take a DT at 12 anyway because we didn't sign Odighizuwa? Placing the transition tag on Odig protects us from having to do that and from whatever player we do draft failing.

I'm not in favor of letting starters go without a successor in place and replacing them with low-rent fill-ins ahead of the draft, either. We've been doing that for years and it has contributed to the team's failures.

Seeing him listed at 6’2 and anywhere from 308-325.
Think he’s probably limited athletically at the NFL as a 1tech. If he had to spend any amount of time at 3tech then things went terribly wrong on the line injury wise!
Didn’t they do that the year they picked up Blade, Nix and the other guy that flamed out from Mississippi. Did it with corners another season!

Yeah, but I think the takeaway on that is it is better to spend a first, fourth and seventh than a third, seventh and seventh if you are going to try to restock a position. If our first DT pick in this draft is a third-rounder, then I consider that a fail.

Depends on if somebody falls but I’d agree!

Well, sometimes you have to be willing to move around to get what you want. Obviously, there has to be a partner in that and the trade value has to be right, but I don't mind if we don't think any DT outside of Graham is worth No. 12, dropping down to where we think Nolen, Harmon and Grant are worth. What happens if you sit still is you just miss out and say, "Oh well, we'll get one next year."
