Desean Jackson Touchdown

I was pointing and screaming at the screen - "Look at the guy in the slot."

They ran this a couple of times in variations. RoMc would have dissected this and been running that way.

Rather see this in a meaningless game where we thumped the other team than see it in the play-offs.

The play was poorly defended and that had a bigger say in DJax running wide open. I coldn't believe they call the same exact play later in the game and gained 40something yards.

LB play is important and that play clearly illustrates why an athletic OLB is a huge need for this team. We have an automatic mismatch in pass coverage all too often. Thank goodness Carter has stepped up.

Williams is within that 3-4 yd area which the refs usually will not call. As others have stated, the issue was that Lawrence appears to have completely blown the coverage. There's no way you can convince me that Barry Church 20+ yds downfield is responsible for DJax there. If the LB does his job there, the play probably only goes 10-15 yds.

Thanks for clarification.

I was reading the nfl rulebook and could not find any reason why this should not be illegal.

I also don't see where it says it's illegal. Here is the verbiage:

On a scrimmage play during which a legal forward pass is thrown, an ineligible offensive
player, including a T-formation quarterback, is not permitted to move more than one yard beyond the line of scrimmage
before the pass has been thrown.

It specifically says this applies when a legal forward pass is thrown. That wasn't a forward pass, so this rule doesn't apply.

How was that not a forward pass? The pass went forward. If Jackson dropped it, the play would have been dead, which only happens on forward passes.

You're right. I was thinking about it being thrown behind the line of scrimmage. But yeah, it was a forward pass. I dunno.

I've seen these types of plays happen regularly in the NFL. The refs tend to give a little leeway to the offensive linemen and will only make the call if the guy is around 5 yards downfield. Two or three yards and they will get away with it. This has benefited Dallas a few times this season.

Who cares?

Bad play by Cameron Lawrence, a reserve.

Next.

Something is really wrong with that picture. I count 8 defenders that I could encircle by drawing a 6-7 yard circle around them and they are all on one side of the field. Any play designed to go left would be a TD against what I see in that picture. Someone has to be screwing up at the moment that picture was taken.

They ran a stetch play fake to the right side of the field, then came back to throw the screen left.

Ummm, you can bet we'll certainly see Detroit try their version of this on Sunday to make sure it's "fixed".

I believe the rule is within 3 yards of the LOS.....looks legal.

IIRC the 3 yard rule is for college,,, for pros its zero though they give them a one yard buffer. I noticed it on the replay as well, the umpires miss that call quite a lot.

I'm thinking about doing an edit of the NFL rulebook from a fan perspective and putting it online. One of the first rules I'm going to draw a big red line through is the illegally downfield rule. It's a stupid rule. I don't see a reason for it. And it usually just calls back a great play like this.

Here's what my rule on this would be:
