Detroit girl, 4, kills cousin with rifle

A four-year-old shot and killed her young cousin with a rifle she found in her grandfather's Detroit home. Why was it loaded? Why was it left out?
 
Video report said that it was a 30 caliber rifle.


Two people have been arrested in connection with a shooting incident where a 4-year-old girl accidentally shot her 4-year-old cousin to death with a loaded rifle that she found under a bed in a Detroit home.

The two, the boy's grandparents, are being held pending charges of felon in possession of a firearm. The grandparents live in the home.

Detroit Police Chief James Craig said two are both convicted felons but said more information would be released after an arraignment. Police are not ruling out additional charges.

Very rare, but even just one like this is heartbreaking.

Kid could have stuck a butter knife in to a light socket and had the same results.

Whoever owned that loaded gun is I trouble though.

Whoever owned that gun is brain dead children see adults do something and think they can use do it its a childs nature what a ***** grandfather
 
Basic gun safety fubar. Especially with young children in the house. Those responsible should get charged.

Over 40,000 people die in the US every year from motor vehicle accidents and about 5% are children. MVAs are the most common cause of accident related deaths in the US and accidents are the most common cause of death in children over the age of one.

Firearm related deaths are much less prevalent although one is too much. But one is too much for unintentional drowning or any other preventable death esp homicide and negligent homicide.

In undeveloped countries illness esp malaria and AIDS as well as malnourishment and starvation are the most common. The five year mortality rate for Nigeria in 1996 was over 50% with the 1 year survival rate roughly the same.

If you want to make noise about GSW's and deaths then make more about all the other causes esp those involving alcohol related motor vehicle accidents.

You can fire back if you've ever had to walk out and tell a parent their child was dead whatever the cause and esp unintentional GSWs from other children.

And yes those two are negligent in the death of that child and should suffer consequences.

idiots all too often live through things while the innocents do not. Drunk driving being the biggest example of that. Here is a case of pure negligence. If you have to keep a loaded rifle (for home defense) put it high on a wall without any way for a child to get at it. You can if you need it but they cannot.

In the old days people kept a loaded shotgun over the mantle of the fireplace. Easy to get to for an adult but not for a child.
 
not sure if this is correct but I think some states will allow convicted felons to have rifles or shotguns but not hand guns.

Didn't miss any part. Just said some people value guns over child safety. People in general, not the ones in the article per say.

That would be the first I've ever heard that. Fairly certain that convicted felons are not allowed to possess firearms of any type anywhere.
 
Loaded weapons are hidden when children are in my home in a place they can't get to without

I think they used to be able to possess a legal shotgun in my state. I'm not certain that applies anymore.

There may be rare cases but most guns that legally purchased go through teh FBI NICS unless its face to face that some states allow for hunting rifles and shotguns (unregulated Firearms)

I am a firearms owner all my guns that are being used for HD are kept loaded, unchambered, and locked up, they are locked up but easily accessible. I keep one firearm on each floor of my house. I have numerous others locked up in cabinets and safes without ammo in them but magazines are close by.

HD guns are useless without their mags and there are many groups that say if you have gun in the house keep the ammo somewhere else that is no where convenient to the gun which defeats the purpose of a HD gun.
