Detroit to take Stafford No 1

I totally agree about the Rookie Cap idea.

I just think that Detroit is making a mistake going for this guy in the first place.

Get an OT or the Wake LB and choose from a much better group of QBs next year. Get your OL in place and bolster your D while managing the QB spot with Culpepper and then next year's drafted QB has some chance of success with parts of the rest of the team in place.

Being from Texas, I think it would be awesome if a dude from freaking Baylor was the first overall pick. Not because I'm a fan of theirs, but because it would be something I never expected to see in my lifetime. lol
Same here.

By the way, Jason Smith had a long interview on GAC yesterday. He sounds like an absolutely great kid. And funny, too... Apparently he's big into rodeo and drives a dually, which made for some pretty funny stories.

I haven't seen much of Stafford, but he feels like one of those QBs teams have to talk themselves into in years where the QB class stinks.

And speaking of Texas and the draft, I guess most people have heard that it will be pretty much unprecedented to have three of the top five players in the draft from high schools within 20 miles of each other -- Stafford, Smith, and Crabtree. Galloway was also going over the 1980 draft when something like 10 of the first 20 picks were from Texas high schools. That was the Billy Sims, Curtis Dickey, UT Jones guys draft.

With Stanton and Culpepper as their only QB, Det would be foolish not to get a QB. With 2 1st rd picks one being the overall #1 and all toll they will have 5 picks out of the 1st 82 picks to help address other needs as well.

Is there ever a time when a team gets an incredible bargain? You know, kind of an opposite situation of getting hammered with a high first round contract?

Only until his contract is up which is the way it should be. Hell, half the time these guys whine about restructuring before their contract is even up. Guys should have to earn their pay.

$80 mil with $40 mil guaranteed for someone who has never played a down of football in the NFL. WOW.
I know I will get lambasted with anti-Skins crud, but, which makes more sense:AH for 100mill/50mill or an untested college qb at 80mill/40mill. Get a good rookie cap in place and then come back and gripe about over-paying for a proven stud vet.

I was hoping he would fall to the second.

We need a QB who's willing to play in December and January.

Foolish Lions, draft picks aren't for kids. You need to start trading all of your top 10 picks away until you grow up and learn how to use them. Hitting on about 1 out of the last 10 years is not successful.

Stupid move. They need to solidify Oline and defense first, then look at quarterback.

He's set up for failure unless he pulls a Carson Palmer and sits his first year. Mark my words though, if he starts from day one he will be a "bust" to no fault of his own.

Yes, but he will have 40 million dollars regardless.

Source: Lions have a deal with Curry if Stafford doesn't sign soon

Tom Kowalski of Mlive.com reports according to a league source, the Detroit Lions have completed contract terms with Wake Forest linebacker Aaron Curry and the team is now waiting to see if it can reach an agreement with their No. 1 target, Georgia quarterback Matthew Stafford. The source said the Lions will not allow a decision to go beyond Friday and if a deal isn't done with Stafford by then, the team will sign Curry and take him with the first overall draft pick.

Wow, Matt Millen gets canned, then the Lions are all the sudden doing very intelligent things like leveraging their second choice to get their first choice cheaper! :laugh2:

Where would Stafford have been taken in the Brady Quinn draft. Or last years draft for that matter.

Between Ryan and Flacco.

Thats a ton of cash for a guy that they don't seem particularly thrilled with. But I'm not at all that impressed with the elite players in this draft.

With that said, watch Stafford shut me up like Flaco and Ryan did.
