Can I start a Deuce Vaughn thread?
I have seen anecdotes on this forum several times about Vaughn's top end speed, and the usual idea is that Deuce "is shifty, but not fast in a straight line". I think that's true for the most part. His side-to-side ability is elite, but his top end speed is not.
But I have also seen "Deuce Vaughn isn't fast" or "Deuce is too slow" several times now, and that just isn't true.
21.5+ mph on the field is ridiculous. It is plenty fast, especially for a RB. That is really fast for a WR, much less a RB.
For reference, the fastest speed hit by a ball carrier so far this season was the Texans WR Nico Collins, clocked at a max of 21.89 mph. The 2nd fastest recorded straight-line-speed so far this season was 21.21 mph, hit by Colts WR Alec Pierce. Pierce ran a 4.41 40 at the combine. He is plenty fast. But, 21.21 mph? We already know Deuce can clear that.
That's it. I just felt like dispelling a myth. I am once again hoping the Cowboys use more Deuce. He is likely the fastest RB on the team.
Vaughn is definitely quicker than fast, but we definitely over rate 40 time straight line speed of football players. It's important to a degree but Vaughn's 4.56 40 is fast enough to take it to the house and is only .08 slower than the average CB. That's basically a flick of the wrist, and if Vaughn has faster short area quickness, that CB isn't running him down.
I too hope we find unique packages to use Vaughn because he brings an element the other backs do not.
