The league officiating continues to double-down and refuses to concede that this rule allows way too much interpretation and needs to be simplified. Imagine that goal line as a pane of glass. Did he break that pane of glass while controlling the football? Yes? Touchdown.

I don't expect the NFL to get it right anytime soon. They've proven to be idiots when it comes to rules. The crap defenseless player rule probably cost SD the game tonight.

It's not complicated. From the point a player controls the ball, two feet down is possession. If in motion, two steps is possession. It's that simple.

Had that same thought as he was stretched out falling backwards out of the end zone. But it was NY in NY and no way the refs were going to steal Eli's goat ( near interception) to hero storyline, or Giants now in first place miracle recovery

Agree. Its hard to realize that a RB can get the ball punched out as he crosses the goal line, and recovered by the opposition and it still would count as a TD if I'm recalling how they view that type of play correctly. Enough of this " control" crap , how many steps, is he a runner, B.S. Lets change the Pain in the A __ rule to your Pane of Glass and we will all be happier..

It's a rule with wording so confusing that the refs get to call it however they want in such situations to influence the outcome of a play, and hence games. Instead of clearing up exactly what is a catch by explicitly delineating it, they have intentionally muddied it even further by the new rule - in order to transparently cover their idiocy in overturning the Dez Bryant catch - for what can only be this single purpose. In other words, they "fixed" the rule in order to allow them to make such overturns that happened in the Dez Bryant case more superficially plausible.

The interesting thing is that they seem to be more stringent on a catch if it leads to a touchdown as opposed to a fumble by the receiver. For instance, Witten's catch/fumble would have likely been ruled an incompletion if was a scoring play but it was ruled a catch/fumble. This is counterintuitive since most other rules seem to be designed to favor the offense.

I'd be more pissed about Eli throwing the ball at a lineman on the final drive to avoid a sack and not getting a grounding call.

the catch rule is a rule that the refs can use to change the outcome of a game so is the pass interference rule when rule are left to the interpretation of an official its not good for the game or the cowboys

Yup. I miss the days when control + two feet down in bounds = a catch. They're way over thinking everything. Also, if I could relay one thing to the NFL with a bullhorn, it would be this: You do not have to have rule changes every year. It's acceptable to have a season with the same rules as last year.

After the league took Dez's catch away last year, they decided to "tweak" the rule to remove the "football move" part of the requirement for a catch. The "football move" was a major point of debate in the Dez catch, so to justify their piss-poor reversal, they removed it from the rule. Dean Blandino is in charge of officiating...he should be held as ultimately accountable for the state of officiating in the league. At what point (if ever) is HE going to be held ACCOUNTABLE? The players play, the coaches coach, and the officials **** it up. Two of the three are held accountable for the product displayed on the field. Very sad.

Pretty clear he was clearly going to the ground and didn't maintain possession.

The rule is stupid but that's the rule.
