Dexter Jackson-WR- Buccaneers Aug. 31 - 9:09 am et

Bucs waived WR/KR Dexter Jackson.

This is the Bucs admitting Jackson was one of the worst draft picks in team history. The speedster out of Appalachian State, was the team's second-round pick in 2008. That was clearly a reach. He was terrible as a return man and didn't catch a single ball as a rookie.

Was supposedly a good punt and kickoff returner, dont know that much about him.

One minute you want to cut people. Next you want to bring in people worse than the players the team already has.

Bucs bail on Dexter Jackson
Posted by Mike Florio on August 31, 2009 9:46 AM ET

Some league observers think that the Tampa Bay Buccaneers won't be cutting quarterback Josh Johnson because they don't want to bail on a fifth-round draft pick from a season ago.

That likely won't be a consideration, given that the Bucs have announced the release of 2008 second-round selection Dexter Jackson.

The undersized speedster (he ran a sub-4.3 at the Scouting Combine) from Appalachian State, who had a key role in the Mountaineers' miraculous 2007 upset of Michigan, had more fumbles (one) than catches (none) as a rookie, and he had zero receptions during the 2008 preseason, thanks to an ankle injury.

Per Pewter Report, Jackson was stripped of his return duties after only seven games last year.

The move comes despite the fact, as Pewter Report points out, that Jackson is due to receive a guaranteed base salary of $450,000 this year.

Jackson will be subject to waivers. If someone claims him, the new team will pick up his contract. If Jackson isn't claimed, he'll be a free agent -- and the Bucs will receive a credit for any base salary he gets from his new team.

UPDATE: A league source tells us that the guarantee actually comes in 2011, and that the money is due in the next 30 days. Per the source, there's no offset language applicable to any money Jackson earns in 2011 from another team. (Basically, the guarantee was aimed at backing up the one-time playing-time incentive.) So the Bucs will avoid the guarantee only if another team claims

That's a guy that might be available for the practice squad and you find out if he fits in or not. Nothing wrong with taking a look with a preseason game to go though.

Again for some reason, i dont remember too much about him. Except he was a high draft choice, a 2nd round pick, and what i remember of him ran a 4.39 but is a very small wr, about 5-9 i think, but very quick and was suppose to be a good special teams returner.

Man... in last year's draft, he was one of the guys that I really wanted the Cowboys to draft.

I must have been WAY off on him. I thought he'd be a great slot WR.

Oh well. I'll chalk this one up as a miss for me.:

I didnt say bring him in, I asked the fans if anyone wasnt interested in him. I don't know that much about him. I was just posting that the bucs cut a high draft pick in 2008 and see if any fans knew anything about him.

To me, if you give up on a high draft pick, he isn't worth the time. I was just letting people know that he was cut because we play them this year, first game of the year.

Personally, I think it shows good team management when you admit you might have made a mistake with a player selected high in the draft and you let him go. Of course, I dont know all the details why he was released, might be some former type of injury he was recovering from, or he didnt study like he should have, or just couldnt play,

Draft pedigree aside, nothing about this guy suggests the fans or the team should want him.

I think you should've read up a bit more on him before posting this one.

Again, I didnt know, thats why i was asking if anyone knew him. Best I remember someone said that someone on this board has inside access to the bucs team. So, he might be able to shed some light on the release.

I also was trying to in a subtle way, prepare fans for a release that the cowboys might make. Might be someone that the Cowboys release that you didnt think the cowboys should release. Its that time, that you make those cuts.

He was thought to be no better than a 4th round pick and pretty much everybody was shocked he was taken in the 2nd round. 'Reaches' that fizzle out early are usually a bad idea. Maybe a good guy to pick up next season for training camp fodder, but the Bucs thought so little of him that they didn't even put him on the practice squad...me thinks he probably has an attitude problem as well.

I remember a few other people here liking him as well. I still like his profile as a guy with great speed and quickness, even if he is undersized.

I'd like to know more about why they gave up on him so quickly. The article mentions an ankle injury... Was that part of it? Does he have a bad attitude?

The part about him not having any catches as a rookie isn't that damning, especially with the lousy QBing they had there.

I can tell you that Buc fans referred to Dexter Jackson as "Slip and Slide".... and that's not a positive nickname.
