Rolando McClain is the polar opposite of Dez Bryant.

Ro is a bright guy and a freakishly good athlete by utter default. He can make an impact on Sunday almost by sheer accident. He has an intuitive grasp of the game, and he can flip a switch by choice and play well on Sunday almost on queue. He's the kid in school with the photographic memory and good looks.

Not Dez. He struggles with the nuances of football. He needs constant direction and guidance regarding the X's and O's and much of life in general. He's simply not as self-aware and self-confident in things most folks take for granted as basic, common knowledge. He's the kid that brings teachers to their last nerve trying to push through the system.

So how is it that Dez became the soul of this football team?

Ro doesn't love football. It's merely a temporary and necessary evil. He doesn't cherish the locker room, or bother with building relationships with teammates and coaches. He doesn't take pride in being an NFL player, and he doesn't consider it any great privilege. He feels no responsibility or obligation to be any more than a Sunday player for a paycheck.

Dez would willingly practice or play a game 365 days a year. He is the constant you never question come game time, and ironically, his infectious passion brings consistency and calmness to this team that his cerebral side can't. How special is that?

Dez is showboat to the world, yet a humble servant to his team. He truly listens and relies on Romo, he appreciates Garrett's fatherly guidance, and Jerry's genuine tough love. (That's why these negotiations confuse and hurt him so much. This is his closest family.)

I often wish the Ro's were like Dez, and the Dez's were like Ro. Both are puzzles wrapped in enigmas hidden in riddles. Frustratingly mesmerizing players.

But give me the Dez's all day. Not because he's great, but because he cares. About winning, about the game, about his team, and even about us. I've been truly won over by the guy after not being so much on his side early on.

Likewise, I think it's time to send Ro packing. Or, I guess just tell him to not bother packing, as it were.

Don't need his fuss, his bad moods, or his condescending arrogance toward the opportunities afforded him and the people that want to embrace him. He doesn't care, and I don't care about people who don't care.

Mike Fisher said something that is gnawing at me, and I trust his inside knowledge even if I don't share many of his views. He said that the coaches didn't really want McClain back, but the front office went ahead and signed him anyway to the veteran minimum. The coaches didn't want him back? If you just go by his performances, why would a coach possibly not want that guy back? Coaches are pros at dealing with all sorts of personalities. You'd think a talent like that would earn extra consideration and patience. But it didn't.

From Tuesday to Saturday, Fish added, McClain is completely checked out. Not interested in the work week leading up to Sunday. Offseasons are much the same. That tells me that once that youthful body starts to leave him, he'll be done in a flash. He won't do anything about it. He won't care.

Somewhere in Alabama, Ro is rehabbing a knee. I suspect his offseason football thought could be condensed within the time frame of a Sponge Bob episode. He's not doing a damn football thing. We all know he's dreading training camp and wants no part of it, and his sour attitude will be hanging over camp like soggy cereal.

Meanwhile, Dez is in sheer panic that a deal won't get done and he'll have to miss camp to make a statement. I don't think he can do it, and neither does he. Miss football practice? On purpose? Are you $%^#$%^ kidding me? Dez is flat freaking out right now over that nightmare scenario.

I really hope Dez eases off his demands enough and gets his deal by July 15th. We all want to celebrate with him. We all want to be happy for him. We all know that he wants to play his ever-loving tail off for all of us. We hurt with him, as do the Joneses, I imagine. Please make the business stuff hurry and go away. Make him understand, so we can get this done and ease his suffering.

It's like watching your kid get a booster shot while they're looking at you with tears in their eyes. You want to punch the nurse in the face even though she's doing the right thing.

As for Ro? I really don't care anymore. Just go away and leave us alone.

Great stuff.

But just an fyi;
According to both Marinelli and Garrett, at least this year Ro DID spend much of the offseason at VR.
And Ro is actually at VR today, and not in Alabama.

But yes...Dez>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>Ro

Glad to hear he's here. But will he stay and engage?

This team has HUGE aspirations this year. If he's not fully on board, then get him out of the way of the guys that are.

Thank Erod, I enjoyed the read.

I'll disagree with you, though, that there is a huge dissimilarity between the two players. What I see is two athletes who go about the business of professional football differently. Nothing more. One has the desirable personality from a fan/ownership/management perspective and the other does not. I neither hate the players nor like them.

Where I definitely agree is that I'd love to see McClain get smacked in the nads and sent packing while Dez is welcomed back (with open arms) into the fold like the biblical Prodigal Son.

Cliff notes, please? :)

I can't say there's much difference in either of them. Dez is as much a playmaker on the field as Ro is. And Ro is bat crazy. Doesn't mean I don't like him, but he needed Saban's discipline to turn his life around. I hate to say this, but without football, I think he's going to find trouble.

Good read!!
I don't think Ro will mentally last this whole season as a starter and I think the FO has the same concerns which is why we're still seriously sifting through LB's throughout this off season. I think they are hoping for at least 8 to 10 good games out of RO before he fades/tires or becomes disinterested which is kind of what happened last year. You can see it in his body language and of course his history of quitting football is significant.
Everyone in here see's the God gifted talent and just yearns for him to muster up some desire. He's certainly a complicated individual that way. Would be cool to see some force (Kraken or Crawford) slap his head on straight where he became a leader on this defense because he has all the physical tools.

Work is work, and I really love employees who come to work wanting to be part of the solution, not the problem. Some just punch a clock, while others choose to find joy in what they do any way they can.

Hope you're wrong on that last part, but there's definitely a wire loose in that brain pan.

Ro is such an anomaly because he's apparently really bright and mild mannered. It's like he's autistic or something socially.

One has brains and talent but lacks desire. The other has heart and talent, but lacks intelligence.

I agree with most of it, but I'd like to think there's still hope for Rolando.

I think Bryant is fine.

Stopped reading after the initial diagnosis of who Dez is as a person and his intelligence.

The rest of your post is a skyscraper built on a shaky foundation.

None of us personally know these people anyways. Who are we to judge the intelligence or personality of a person who is in reality a complete stranger.

To be honest I don't care about their personalities, backgrounds, or mental philosophies. Just play football. I pay to watch to be entertained by the game. Not to care whether you can construct a sentence together or know about the subject of Hermetic Alchemy. It doesn't make me feel good knowing Dez Bryant had a 4.0 GPA in college. It has no affect on my personal situation whatsoever.

I wouldn't trust anything Fisher has to say about McClain, ever since McClain got here Fisher has tried to "scoop" stories but rumor or innuendo about McClain and as none of it stuck I think McClain has become his white whale.

Don't you think it's pretty well documented?

And if you read on, I pretty much put him on the highest plateau of anyone on the team.

Very good read erod.

Ro is wasting a great opportunity here. You know Jerry has a soft spot for guys off the beaten path. If he'd show more commitment to the game, I guarantee you Jerry would have been willing to work out a long term deal with him. Put some real money in his pocket. Instead he's done the bare minimum, turned off the coaches, and will most likely be let go after this season.

Dez is Dez. A true man of the people. The most approachable Cowboy in history. When we cry, he cries. When we thump our chest, he's chewing out an Eagle or Commander. He is emotionally invested in THIS franchise. Irvin re-incarnated in that regard. After having to endure years and years of robots in that locker room, he is truly a blessing and big part of why this fanbase and 72 yr old Jerry Jones are so re-energized.

So you guys are saying we let go a few stud LBs knowing Ro would not last for mental reason?

I'd like you to show where it's been documented recently that Dez is this immature hoodlum who lacks common sense and doesn't understand the nuance of the wide receiver position.

If this were 2011? I'd have to agree. But unfortunately for your premise it's not.

I don't think the FO could afford those "studs" although I wish we could have kept at least 1 of the 2. I think they figured Carter and Durant were not worth market price that was projected to be offered so stuck with building/churning for LB talent besides Ro and Co.
Obviously I'm guessing/assuming all this however with the unpredictable baggage Ro carries, it's a gamble either way. Would love to be wrong on this.
