Dez Specific or Primary Read Specific?

There is no but about it. With his dimished skills and terrible route running I'm not completely sold that Dez was the best WR on the team. Cowboy Nation was getting sick and tired of watching the forced passes to Dez. Now there is WR corp of route running specialists. That alone makes Dak a better QB.
It's interesting. Dak apologists are setting it up so it's heads I win and tails you lose.

Dak was forced to throw to Dez that's why he underperformed. So with Dez gone he'll blow up right? But but but with Dez gone and Witten gone and a lack of weapons Dak has no chance so not his fault again?

Time will tell what the prevailing argument is. But i've seen both.

I see a lot of posts saying that with Dez gone, Dak will have the choice of throwing to the open WR. But, there's a but.

And here it is:

Dez was the best WR on the Cowboys. So it seems logical that he would be the primary on a lot of plays.

Was Dak throwing (or wanting to throw) to the primary target on the play?
If Dak was targeting the primary, it wouldn't have mattered if it was Dez or somebody else. If it would have been John Doe playing the X position, then John Doe would have been highly targeted.

Are the coaches strict about going through progressions according to play design?

Was Dak allowed to determine the primary based on what the defense was showing?

Dak could help a receiver get a little more separation by not making the primary his first look. He could give his first look to another receiver, pump fake, and then look to the primary read.

Dez was not anywhere close to being the best Cowboys receiver. That's why is he is GONE and can't find a job!

I read somewhere that it was a case of the offensive philosophy under Linehan. Supposedly, ANYTIME the X receiver is 1-on-1 in his system, he is to get the ball. The vast majority of Dak’s passes were determined by the pre-snap read.

Supposedly, that is changing this year. Can’t wait to see it actually happen.

That explains a lot of stupid from last year.
