Did anyone catch Jerry on with Norm?

I think most people could watch Free in the preseason last year and see that he had talent.

Left tackle is the most pressure packed position on the line though and it is a lot to ask of a young player, particularly one drafted in the fourth round.

If you want a quality LT, chances are you have to acquire them with a high draft choice. We would be extremely fortunate to get one with two second day draft choices like with did with Free and McQuistin.

Think about it. Undrafted free agent QB throwing to seventh round pick (Crayton) being protected by another second day pick (Free, McQuistin). If that is successful, we had one special scouting department.

I was going throught Free's college scouting report a couple of weeks ago, and I found something interesting . . . . I believe it was his college coach who said Free was more talented than R Diem (sp?) of the Colts coming out of college.

I'll see if I can locate the article via google later on.

I'm not saying Free is as good, but the report on Free was that he was a better prospect.

If Jones intends to let Adams go, then I hope we at least acquire another veteran LT as insurance.

I like Free and McQuistin but I don't see how we can be confident they can both play the most important position on the offensive line with just a few plays of real NFL action under their belts.

Prefer that to countless and costly false starts...A lot of teams around the league go young, even at LT...I say let him go.

...being able to replace high-priced players like Flo with high-quality younger guys is key to us maintaining a place among the NFL's elite. Teams that do this well (NE, PHI, IND, etc...) are consistently good year in/year out (barring injuries to QB).

I couldn't agree more....the teams that hang on to vets forever and/or overpay for older free agents (Commanders, K.C, Rams, Raiders) are doomed for failure.

Free may be the eventual heir to the LT position but I would give him another year of going against Ware in practice before I hand the job over to him outright.

I trust babe laufenberg over any analyst or reporter etc...

He raved about free at camp last year. I trust that opinion.
Yep, he said Free was the most impressive rookie he saw... Including Spencer.

(He also said Marten was the worst.)

It's too bad Houck wasn't here longer to have watched these guys practice for a year and give his opinion on them, isn't it?

Free was at the top of the 2nd tier of OTs in 07 & was projected to go late
2nd or 3rd rounds. He slide to the 4th only because he played on an injuried foot his entire senior season. Very athletic with speed, he's 6-6, 306. Frankly when I saw he was available in the 3rd round, couldn't understand why the Cowboys drafted Marten; but happily we made up for that by drafting Free in the 4th. You should have heard my singing/dancing when we got him.

Looking forward to seeing him on the field after he's been working in the Cowboys weight conditioning program. His 6-6 frame should allow him to add considerable bulk and strength (w/o steriods guys) so he can take on those big/speedy pass rushers coming his way. Will also be interested to see how well Marten does and whether he provides any competition for Colombo. I do love Colombo's nasty disposition on the field. Wouldn't be surprised if McQuistan gains experiences at OG to challenge Kosier. With all the challenges facing our OL from within the team, will be interesting to watch developments there. Sure hope Houck can get the best out of our entire OL including Gurode's snaps in the shotgun.

I think to start the season the gameplan was to resign or franchise Flozell, but now the money that's going to be needed to resign Barber and Hamlin coming off the kind of years they had will make it hard. I think Free and McQuinstan will be given the opportunity to battle for the position in camp, with Bigg as the contingency plan.

The price did go up on several people on this team, and I think management regards the young guys and Hamlin more highly than they do Flozell.

I actually think Flozell's end hurts him too. He was one of the guys on the team who seemed to have some trouble to end the season, particularly in the fourth quarter against the Giants.

But he still plays a big need position. He protects Romo's blind side. He's a second team all-pro. He's a life-time Cowboy.

So I don't have a clue what is going to happen?

i don't get the love for hamlin over flozell. one guy was absolutely dominant at an extremely important position, another guy was just average.

if ken hamlin was making plays fine, but playing zone and having balls fall into your lap isn't great play.

Given the lack of improvement of Reeves and Williams in the secondary, I for one am glad Bowles is going. Later dude!

This bit is from Scouts, Inc.,

Free suffered a stress fracture in his foot in the season opener (Ohio State) that lingered throughout most of his senior year. As a result, he did not look as agile as he did on film from the previous season. Even when at full strength, Free has never been an overpowering blocker and he will need to improve his strength in order to sustain blocks longer in the NFL. With all that said, Free is still worthy of first-day consideration because of his impressive combination of size and mobility. He draws many comparisons to former Northern Illinois OT Ryan Diem, who currently starts at right tackle for the Colts, but Free is a significantly better prospect now than Diem was in 2001.

Tim MacMahon entitles his first post on this “The best things in life are Free.” He notes, “He’s 6-7, 318 pounds and agile, so he might be a better fit at left tackle than third-round pick James Marten, who played on both sides at Boston College.” He snarks, “Wonder how Pat McQuistan feels about the Cowboys’ draft so far.”

In his second post, he asks, “Will this be Flozell’s final season in Dallas?” He observes, “The Cowboys might not be running Adams out of town, but they sure are preparing in case he does leave. And they’re positioning themselves so that Adams won’t be able to hold them hostage in contract negotiations.” Quite right. And a good deal.

Free is on The Ticket, talking to Norm Hitzges, Goose Gosselin, and others. Hitzges asks Free why he thinks he fell so far, since he was considered a 2nd or 3rd round possibility. Hitzges notes that the Cowboys “took about 9 seconds” to make this pick and were high-fiving themselves that Free fell this far.

Indeed, Free was the #77 prospect on Gosselin’s board. That’s pretty good value at #122. Interestingly, James Marten, picked by the Cowboys in the third round yesterday (#67), was ranked 85th.

OK, it wasn't Free's coach who said he was a better prospect than Diem, but Scouts, Inc. . . . . my mistake.

and dont forget the dreaded reality that leonard davis can slide over....that would be a nightmare though.

If we move LD to tackle I think we are in for a long year, and Romo won't be on the field for the finish. We'd be significantly weaker at 2 positions on the OL.

Is Pagano available? That's who Wade supposedly would've liked for DC, but I thought he was at San Fran. Unless he got released.

Manusky is the one who went to SF. Pagano is currently the outside LB coach in SD with Ron Rivera as the Inside LB coach -- Rivera and Turner have some ties so it wouldn't surprise me to see Rivera, who was the Chicago DC and a HC candidate last off-season, take on a bigger role with SD, leaving Pagano free. I doubt that if he wants to leave that they'd hold him back.

I see Pagano as the OLB coach with Dat Nguyen serving as the inside LB coach.

Ah, my bad. Pagano was the one they refused to let go, right?

If they'd let him go now, that would be great.
