Did anyone see the NFLN bit on what coaches look for

... when scouting players for the draft?

Most of the coaches mentioned something about character. "I want to see how mentally tough he is", "Do his actions meet his words", "Does he love football", etc.

In fact, I think that was the point of the piece -- that character matters.

When they got to Wade after many other coaches, his answer was "talent".

Maybe it means nothing, but then maybe it does. The way Jerry likes to gamble on talented guys with question marks -- or at least used to -- makes me wonder about guys like Jenkins and Talib that have talent but also some character question marks.

Those interviews were definitely edited. I don't think any coach said talent alone.

In fact, Herm mentioned character but also said that high character guys with no talent aren't going to make the NFL - or something to that effect.

It's not just talent or character to the exclusion of all other issues.

It's all of the above.

True, but I think the first thing that came into their head was the one they showed.

Good post CL. Thanks for bringing that clip to our attention.

I've wondered if Wade's thinking would influence Jerry in this draft. That's something that doesn't get much discussion.

Wade was around during the great Earl Campbell days so he knows the tremendous impact a great rookie RB can have on an entire organization. I've wondered what his thoughts are on McFadden.

Switzer was quoted as saying MsFadden has more burst than McPherson. If Jerry receives drooling reviews from guys like Lacewell, Switzer and then Wade, he may do whatever it takes to move up to get him.

I think its WP being himself. He's always kind of a smart*ss. And honestly, isnt that the first thing they should be looking for?

I remember BP saying that he used to ask players what they love most in life - football had to be in the top 3.

Well, I'm glad the first thing on Wade's mind is TALENT.

At one time, the first thing on JJ's mind was CHARACTER, and that's why Randy Moss hasn't been playing for the Cowboys for the past decade.

And one reason we have a very good locker room. Once Aikman left- or our O line declined- how long before Moss was causing all sorts of trouble?

Meant to say Peterson, obviously. Not McPherson.
